Edit : yeah this is exclusive to BBC Sherlock.
His name is William Sherlock Scott Holmes. Makes me curious what Mycroft's name is but I almost feel like as the eldest he was the trial run for odd names, thus his first name was the odd one. I like the idea that Sherlock looked up to Mycroft and thus chose to have a "cool" name too and insisted to go by his odd middle name.

Nice way to correct for an error made by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in one of the books. I forget which book but his wife calls him James instead of John so it was theorized that Watson’s middle name was Hamish. With Hamish being the Scottish equivalent of James.
