The Spirited Man is an unlimited series about the spirited man or woman who lives inside all of us (and fixing things).

ABOUT VAN NEISTAT:
A pioneer in digital filmmaking, Van Neistat made his first internet video, The Holland Tunnel, in 2000. He went on to collaborate with New York City artist Tom Sachs, directing a series of short films shown at the Guggenheim Museum in Berlin. Van has since directed dozens more films for the Tom Sachs Studio. In 2010 HBO aired The Neistat Brothers, an 8-episode series of short videos made entirely by Van and his brother Casey Neistat. Van Neistat’s directorial debut feature, A SPACE PROGRAM, co-written by Tom Sachs, premiered at the 2015 South by Southwest Film Festival and opened in theaters nation-wide in spring, 2016. In 2018 Neistat Directed the short film Paradox Bullets, co-written with Tom Sachs, narrated by Werner Herzog, and starring Ed Rushca. Neistat has written and directed commercial projects for Nike, Hurley, Kate Spade, Tory Burch, J. Crew, Twitter, Sleepy Jones and Frances Valentine. His work has been exhibited in museums throughout the world. He lives in Topanga, California.

About a decade ago I replicated your Swiss Knife with keys that you made for Tom. I loved that thing dearly but sadly let it go when I sold my ‘89 Honda Civic and the only key I had for it was in that knife. These films are fantastic Van. I remember watching Casey engrave everything in his earlier videos. I engraved some of my own items because of him. I'll probably engrave more because of this.

My mom had a tradition that every boy in my family got a Swiss army knife for their 10th birthday. She would keep them sharp and everything to signify that we have to be more responsible. I still have it to this day kept safe, but I have since moved up to Gerber and Leatherman 🤷‍♂️ every kid should have one!

I tried this! Great instructions. I inscribed “measure twice” on mine.

One improvement to this process: use a soldering iron with a small knob for the temperature. You can see how hot the wood burner is and any little shake is visible. With a cooler soldering iron you can get smoother results. I set mine to 250F and got a look I liked. And the plastic doesn’t stick on the soldering iron like solder does.

Also I didn’t have an old knife to try on so I used an old 30 pin iPod cord connector which is a similar plastic.

I was also given my first Swiss army knife at 3 years old any time I tell people they look at me like my parents were mad but it's such a good time to learn knife safety and it allows you to start tinkering in the outdoors even if the blade is dull.
