As a Greek kid I’ve had this a lot. It was indeed used as gum. The Greek soldiers used to chew it constantly. It can be found in several Greek baked goods as well.

As a girl that her origins are from Chios I feel very proud. Some random fan facts you didn't know.
1. This shit is really expensive. And mean it.
2. The mastic oil is used in candy making and it costs around 85€ (Euros) per Lt.
3. Chios is the only place in the world that mastic is produced.
4. One single tree can produce around to 150gr to 400gr per year.
5. Mastic is a life savior. If your having a stomach ache you can use some to feel better
6. The way of the production is incredible. First things first, the put on the ground some white dirt (idk how it's called). Then, the kinda "hurt" the tree so the retsina will start dripping and eventually fall into that dirt and this is were it will solidify and become a mastic gum. Then they pick it up and it's ready to be sold.

HI CAN I PLEASE MAKE A SUGGESTION!! This gum is awesome. It has no big flavor, BUT what I love doing is a chew it till it’s as thin as possible. Then I put it to the side to dry. When I come back it’s SO CRUNCHY! Then it’s fun again. Rinse and repeat indefinitely! Also, it cleans your teeth ☺️

My mother and grandmother eat this gum and I love it too the taste of the good quality ones is sooo good
