Great review! I was like you and did have a hard time with some of the darker scenes, especially the torture scenes, but I'm glad I persisted and finished the series because it was very good! These characters are so well realized and complex. I never thought I'd root for a torturer, but really liked following Glokta's story. I enjoyed the humour, too, and it definitely helped me balance the darker parts of the book. I felt the action picked up a lot in the second and third books. I'm excited to hear your thoughts on the rest of the series!
