I believe your assertion is correct. Personally, I think YouTube is just trying to make it harder to view their content when it's not on their website. I, and many others I'm sure, will be waiting eagerly for a new .lua file to be created to alleviate this frustration, thank you for this update! You're a lifesaver!

good bit of detective work here, thanks for making this follow up. at first I thought it was just me, but should have guessed it was a planned thing...hopefully we get a fix as community is usually good at stuff like this, even if it takes a while.

Still the same issue. Not sure why all other files in "playlist" folder are .luac and downloaded file is just .lua. Anyway renaming is not doing nothing as well.

TLDR: He says youtube changed something, the lua file no longer works, and it won't until the VLC guys fix it.
There, that saved you 4 minutes.
