Now it just needs a RAM upgrade. Does require soldering, but it's only 4 chips, so not too bad of a job. Surprisingly, Leopard actually runs WAY better on these with 512MB. Though, I am working on a way to get 1GB working on these, which will be even more of a nice upgrade.

If you don’t have a blow dryer (3:51) you can power it on, make it get warm or hot in some way, it makes it much easier to peel off without breaking.

Apple really did think differently when they chose to ship this unit with an IDE HDD from the time of Pentium 3 laptops. As a matter of fact, I upgraded my 40GB disk to 120GB on my 1GHz P3 laptop, back in the day, just before getting a P4 one.
PS: the video is really awesome and the OS upgrade is quite intriguing, so the entertainment factor of this clip is high.

AHHH! That Gateway HD LCD monitor was my first LCD panel! I freaking LOVED that thing because of all the inputs it had! Composite, component, DVI, VGA, S-Video and a USB hub. That was an awesome monitor for the time, even if the picture kinda sucked. I remember using that bad boy for my PC, Xbox 360, original Xbox and PS2 all hooked into various inputs, and loved showing off how I could seamlessly switch my monitor from PC to game console. I even have the menu sound burned into my brain. DOO DOO.... Deedoo.... Good times...

I wish that Apple still did the intro videos, that was a great touch.

I liked the computer clans video on this so I’ll definitely like this video!

Thanks for another video for me to watch instead of sleeping and the being late for college.
This is going to be totally worth it in the end!

In the early days of the Apple TV (1st Gen) I compiled and modified Mono to run .NET binaries on the Apple TV, which included the Banshee Music Player. The performance of the boxwasn't too exciting, but it was easily possible.

I remember people doing this backkkk in the day! I was an avid Hackintosher so it always peaked my interest. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

I just have to say, that bit at 9:00 where Disk Utility fails with a random error... that is so relatable. DU is so fragile, it never freakin works right. How hard is it to write a utility to partition and format a disk without tripping on its own 🦆??

since i did this already last year when i found a site on how to mod a first gen apple tv to mac os, was so easy, just used a keyboard with usb ports and a external cd rom drive and mouse with copy of mac os x, still works. found an apple tv in recycle bin, so i grabbed it to use it as a first gen mac mini. not bad for a free mac

I don't think I've ever seen a device with an HDMI port that still uses an IDE HDD, anyways... Thank You Michael, very cool!

Very nice. I had to try several times on a ATV1, but with 160GB HD on different iMacs. But now it worked and it works perfectly fine. I'm surprised that it even shows full HD on my monitor. I'll use it for eMail and some lightweight stuff!
