I am Ukrainian. We say little about the Holodomor for two reasons. The first reason is that until the 80s of the 20th century, people could go to jail for talking about it. The second reason is that it is difficult to talk about it. It's hard to admit because not everyone survived. Most families deliberately did not feed some children so that others would have more food to survive. It's hard to admit, because the younger children were eaten, but the families survived. It's hard to admit, because food was given to the denunciation, and the families survived. Many surviving families had a skeleton in the closet and no one wants to talk about it because it's scary because you hate yourself for it, but the family survived.

During terrible tragedy my father was 8 years old.
Eternal memory of Dmytro Vyshnivsky, he died of starvation at the age of five.

very informative!! This genocide deserves more attention! People should know why Ukrainians don't want to get called as russians. We have an own country, own language, own culture..

Hododomor was a tool used by the Soviet regime to break resistance to the newly formed Red Empire, the USSR. Stalin labelled all national movements for Independence as existential threat for the Red Empire. The Holodomor was preluded by a shortly-lived Ukrainian Independent state, Ukrainian republic in 1917-1919. Ukrainian farmers strongly supported a sovereign independent state of Ukraine. Moreover, Ukrainian farmers were a source of never ending revolts against Soviet Bolsheviks regime in 1928, 1929. To break a resistance of the multimillion nation was certainly a big challenge for Stalin. In order, to break resistance, German Nazis built concentration camps. In the USSR, it was decided that in order to break a resistance of national movements in Ukraine as a largest soviet republic but also national movements in other parts of the Red Empire, it was easier to let farmers to starve to death and replace them with more loyal to the Empire Russian population from the heartland of Russia. Thus, the Famine was imposed on those farmers by the government. Ukrainians were the most affected population by imposed by the government measures, but also famine was imposed in Kazakhstan, areas in Russia, where Ukrainians lived. In order to impose the famine, Ukrainian borders were closed by the Red Army, bands of commissars confiscated grain and food from farmers, and nobody could escape of the affected simply because farmers didn’t even have IDs to move around the country, and with borders closed, there was no escape, just slow death by starvation.
