You can do that with suger water, suger and salt are Crystal structures when solid. So when mixed and heated in water it gives a Medium for the molecules of the salt or sugar to slowly be able to group together to make a perfect crystal structure. The trick really is gained the right ratios and allowing it to slowly cool over time to get bigger crystals.

You can do this with sugar.

Dissolve sugar in water until you can't add anymore.
Dye it if you want
Wet a popstick and cover it in sugar
Leave it in the *cooled* sugar solution and wait.
Eat it if you want

The dissolved sugar (solute) should attach to the crystals on the stick.
