Soft Clipping on Mastering - How to use soft clipping when mastering EDM - FL Studio 12 Tutorial

In this video I'm gonna cover how to use soft clipping in conjunction with a final limiter to reduce the work load for the final limiter and have an overall louder mix, whilst explaining the cons of the soft clipper as you introduce a softer threshold (louder at the expense of losing transients, dynamics). This method is used heavily especially in EDM.

@ 3:41 I think you may have this backwards, if you want to retain more of the transients, you want a softer knee setting, thus not chopping them off. If you want to use this as a hard clip (chop the transients right off) You will want a hard knee. This is critical for mastering in the sense, you want to keep your peaks in check (under -1). Use the clipper for the peaks processing an uncompressed signal (well unlimited signal) then use the limiter directly after the clipper for the main lifting. If you use the clipper after the limiter, you are squeezing and already squeezed signal. Thus the clipper first, the limiter second. Hope that made sense, thanks

Do you have any videos on the reverb you used in that track? It was super clean, and I’m missing target lately.

What do you think would be the disadvantages of using soft clipper apart from the distortion they add, some say it makes the song feel smaller, what do you think?
