"I was fighting in this little skirmish you may have heard of called World War 2, what were *YOU* doing during that time?"

How on the world wouldn't those dates ring alarm bells immediately?! 😮

I mean, I wouldn't have blamed him if he'd added after "fighting" - "for my country, and your future."

Right after the war one of the local colleges had a prof that was making light of what soldiers went through in the war. The class was full of vets going to school on the GI bill. There was a little muttering, then about 3 of them picked him up, dragged him through the hallways and down the stairs and threw him in the fountain. A reprimand was given by the college - to the professor.

When i was 6 or 7, I was already literate. My late maternal grandad, who I adored, had lost an arm and a leg 40 years before in WW1.
He could write with his left hand, but not well.
So I often helped him fill out various forms concerning his army pension, etc - and of course at that age I was thrilled to do it.
One day, I told grandad the next question on the form was, "Has the condition improved?"
Grandad stood, dropped his trousers and stood proudly in his red sullivans, one leg of which was of course turned up at the knee for want of occupancy.

"Write this down, bonny lad! The limb does NOT appear to have re-grown!"

Thing is, grandad always claimed he'd never fought for king, country, flags, or gods - he trusted none of them.
He'd fought for the guys who had stood alongside him, and bitterly mourned how many had been lost. Heroes led by swine, he would say.
He himself had lain a long time in a pile of dead until someone noticed him moving. That salvation followed by two field amputations.
Can modern generations even comprehend all that?

"Those that I fight, I do not hate. Those that I guard, I do not love!" We learned to leave him alone on those black days.

I've had the complete 180 of this. I've had some interviews asking what I did in the Marines. I give them a list of responsibilities I had, with some general details for some of them. Then they pressure me to give more details, I tell them I can't due to security clearance issues, and they just can't grasp that there are things in military service we are not allowed to share.

I want to believe this is a well-intentioned question that was just poorly executed. Guessing they wanted to evaluate what they learned during their time there, or they were curious and hoped for a war story. Fine to be curious, but to be honest, probably better suited for an interview where they can perceive your tonr as curious and not interrogatory.

Also this reminds me of an Australian Paralympian years ago after winning gold in his event, someone asked him "Has it always been your dream to win gold in the Paralympics?"
In true Australianism, he responded, "Not when I could fucken walk."

To quote a dear friend, now deceased, "Earning two Purple Hearts, one Bronze Star and protecting your Constitution. Any more questions?"

He must have signed up right at the start, too. Truly courageous.

I was once told at a job interview after I was out of the service that "the company is uncomfortable hiring a mercenary."
Yes, "US Army" to that moron HR dept equalled "mercenary/hired gun".
The lawsuit was amazing. Most money I ever was given that I did nothing for TBH.

Employer: "What were you doing between 1939 and 1945?"
Applicant "Killing Nazis"

That's pretty polite. I doubt I'd have been that polite in my response.

Career gap questions need to go away. It's none of their business
