5) Hideki Tojo - Death Toll 5 million.
Hideki Tojo was a general in the Imperial Japanese Army but he also got the position of Prime Minister, Army Minister, Home Minister, Foreign Minister, Education Minister & Commerce Minister between 1940 to 1944.
He made ties with the Nazis hoping that he would rise to power alongside Hitler.
He also relentlessly started attacking other Asian countries, killing about 5 million people in the process.
When the war ended, the extent of his war crimes became clear.
He was tried and found guilty of waging wars of aggression, wars in violation of international law, and waging unprovoked war against many countries.
He was hung on December 23rd, 1948 at the age of 63.
4) Leopold II of Belgium - Death Toll 2 - 15 million.
Leopold II was the King of the Belgians between 1865 to 1909.
He truly believed that in order to make his country great he must colonize other countries overseas.
However Belgium as a population disagreed and really didn't care about colonizing any country.
He started a company called the International African Association, which made out to be a humanitarian, loving organisation that wants to help people in central Africa.
In reality it was just a front so he can steal their land, natural resources & rule over it.
He then forced the native people into forced labor & slavery, working on a highly profitable rubber industry where he bagged all the cash.
He abused, mutilated & killed the workers who couldn't meet this production quotas or in any way objected to what he was doing.
Roughly 10 - 15 million Africans died under his brutal rule, and he was never tried or put to justice for what he did.
3) Adolf Hitler - Death Toll 17 million.
At first he gained support from the German people, as he promised to make Germany great again and his anti-semitic values weren't too obvious at first.
Once in power Germany slowly realized they may have made a huge mistake.
He was extremely power hungry, hated Jews with a passion and essentially wanted to be the biggest and baddest ruler the world has ever seen.
This shows in just some of the military weapons he ordered to be made.
The end result was the death of about 17 million civilians, 6 million of whom were Jews, and the rest were Polish, Hungarians, Russians, French, Slovakians, and even Germans.
2) Josef Stalin - Death Toll 23 million.
Josef Stalin was the first Secretary of the Communist Party from 1922 – 1953.
After Vladimir Lenin’s death in 1924, he became the leader of the Soviet Union.
He launched a new economy that basically left millions without food.
About 2.6 - 10 million Ukrainians died from starvation.
It is widely accepted he did this on purpose as an attack on Ukrainian nationalism.
During the late 1930's Stalin launched another initiative called the Great Purge.
It was a paranoid campaign to kill off the people who opposed him, and his targets were often executed.
In 1939 Stalin agreed to a non-aggression pact with the Nazis which meant no military action would be taken against the two nations for at least 10 years.
Germany violated the pact, the Soviet Union joined the allies, and they racked up 23.9 million civilian deaths, although many experts believe the figure can be as high as 50 million.
1) Mao Zedong - Death Toll 49 - 78 million.
Mao Zedong was a Chinese revolutionary, political theorist, and communist leader who led the People’s Republic of China.
During his first five years from 1949 – 1953 he is said to have systematically killed between 4 to 6 million people by sentencing them to die or by sending them to reform through labor camps.
He organized mass repressions, established execution quotas, and defended his actions in these early years as necessary for securing power for “The People’s Republic of China”.
He then focused on trying to make China a premier exporter of steel.
Citizens had to make smelting shops in their backyards, but there was no steel to produce.
The steel had very little value so they got no money and about 20 million people starved to death.
Finally he decided to ask the people how he should rule China.
About half a million people came forward and gave their suggestions.
Suddenly Mao had a change of heart and killed them as they were considered to be “dangerous thinkers”.
Essentially only the few people at the very top benefit.
