Key to success in horizontal and vertical bone augmentation is knowing what is possible, what is predictable, and what requires the appropriate clinical expertise.

In Episode 27 of the AO Spotlight podcast, Craig M. Misch, DDS, MDS provides a clinical and academic approach to managing different clinical situations based on the type of bone defect. With The Dental Guys, Dr. Misch discusses evidence-based decision trees for determining when augmentation is needed, required techniques and materials, including the graftless approach with short implants, an increasing area of research and practice.

Additionally, with increasing frequency of peri-implantitis, there is a greater need for vertical augmentation, according to Dr. Misch. He also indicates setting expectations for treatment time, success rate and complications is a priority for patients.

Be sure to tune in to this episode for an enlightening discussion about the science of bone augmentation, the content of his new book, published by Quintessence.

Discussing bone grafting for future implants without consideration of soft tissue quality and augmentation, or prosthetic implications and requirements, is leaving out a lot. Too often, surgeons or even GPs are only looking at a CBCT, not the whole picture. That invites many problems.
