Responding to the terrible review of the Playstation Portal by Linus Tech Tips and Linus Media group, which was full of moving the goal post and obfuscation of major issues. This video by Linus Tech Tips proves even more how much of a total fraud he is.

The Vita mention reminded me that Sony made this with a Straight face and didn't give us a Vita Successor.
Truly Dark Days we live in.

Six hundred dollar backpack!? For that much, it better be the equivalent to Diego's Rescue Pack.

The Playstation Portal is useless in 90 percent of public wifi spots, see? they really did include a brick, just not a charging one

You got some good points. Linus did start out saying a lot of really good things that he goes against now. I think it is because he grew his channel to large. Needing to pay all those employees really changes things.

I remember getting kicked from battlefield 3 lobbies from high ping (70ms) so 140ms is HELL

Until someone manages to mod it, and turn it into a decent, portable emulation machine. Nobody will care.

They should have just reworked the Play Station Portable instead of whatever this trash is. The old psp has a lot of the features that this one lacks

If someone asked me to design the worst handheld ever, it woudn't even be this bad

The funny thing is that the ps vita did the exact same thing that ps portal does. You can use both, the ps3 and ps4 with the vita in the same way as the portal with ps5, pair your console to the vita and voilà, you can use 2 different gens consoles with just your vita if you are in the same network (that's the only downside to that but is the exact same principle).

In fairness to him those are amazon affiliate links that amazon compensates the channel for, not sony.

You could make the argument that a positive video on a new sony product would encourage more affiliate purchases and therefor he's insensitivised to lie but that would be grouping in A LOT of tech reviewers.

I dislike the shilling, but this video is super straw man and shows a lack of understanding of manufacturing.

Yes there are no licensing fees for Sony to use their own software, but they have to pay their employees for the hours spent designing, coding, and testing it...
Though the controllers on the portal are similar, they probably still required some new custom tooling and manufacturing. Though the plastic doesn't cost much, the custom machines to create an assemble the parts cost a lot.
Ask for bulk ordering components, this doesn't always give as much of a discount as you expect. Sony's vendors still need to make a profit and if they already have tight margins they can only do so much to reduce the price for bulk orders.

Yes if you break down the individual cost of the plastic, chips, and screen, the device it's not worth $200. But if you consider the upfront cost to develop software and create new manufacturing processes for the device, In addition to the relatively low volume they'll probably sell to recover that cost as well as trying to make a profit, that's where the additional cost comes from.

The portal is a dumb niche product, but If it fills the niche you're in, $200 is not an insane price.

As for the LTT bag, I don't know about the business decision to sell a $600 backpack, but it's made out of Apple leather. I don't know if you ever looked up Apple leather products, but even a small wallet can cost over $100. I'm not saying it's a good idea to sell or buy one, but it is priced in line with other similar products.

1:18 when I saw it the first time I said the same thing it looks like a like a Wii U gamepad. Probably the one who designed it had a Wii U and saw it and say you know what we can make something like this, and for some reason which is kind of blowing my mind why are people obsessed with the portal.

Literally the device itself becomes a $200 paperweight if there's no Wi-Fi. The fact that a lot of these fanboys are bringing the portal with them on the go even though it wasn't designed to be that way because it's so big and ugly.

I would have rather had Sony released a steam deck clone and with a digital storefront where you can buy psp, ps1, ps2, ps3, and vita games, but sony went to lazy route and made a streaming device instead. They could've called it the vita 2 or some crap like that.

2:38 you can play Hollow Knight on the Nintendo switch, and the steam deck, and I don't need to worry about having a streaming because it's going to be on the system.

Why don't Sony release a handheld console that can play PS1, PS2, and even PS3 games that are sharpened and with improved performance? We have the technology, plus the libraries of these consoles are immense, which would open a market to both old school gamers and younger people like me to be able to experience 00s gaming in higher quality and while on the go?

I spent $180 on a PS2 (and about $50 per game) just so that I could experience the PS2 era of Dynasty Warriors (currently on DW5 now, I am very impressed). With a modern handheld console, it can expedite the process.

I have a few points to make regarding this video:

1. The Wii U was also used in Joysound Karaoke parlors in Japan, where one could select which song they want to sing to on a Wii U Gamepad. Additionally, Kirisaki Chitoge from Nisekoi (an anime that has its tenth anniversary in 2024) made a guest appearance in Super Mario Maker 1 for Wii U.
2. The PlayStation Portal's cost in Japan is roughly 3000-4000 yen less than the regular Switch, and this is because of the weakening yen as of 2024-01-15. At this point, even the regular Switch is a better buy in Japan, while in the US, the Switch Lite is a better buy.
3. The Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Legion GO, and Logitech G Cloud can also stream games from not only your PS5, but also your PS4 thanks to Chiaki. Chiaki can also send wakeup packets to your PS4 or PS5, so if you're going out of town, you can leave your console in sleep mode and turn it on remotely from your accomodation's Wi-Fi.
4. Many people have made portable PS4s on YouTube, which plays PS4 games natively. However, it might be too heavy to use practically, and the short battery life (1 hr or less) is a concern.
5. As of 2024-01-15, the price of a PlayStation Plus Premium yearly subscription in Japan does not exceed 100 USD. This is also because of the weakening yen. Meanwhile, Americans have to pay the 60 USD Sony Tax, with applicable state sales taxes on top of the Sony Tax.
