Many of the Pokemon games end in or just after an icy area, yet ice type is considered one of the competitively worst types of all, so why would Game Freak design their games this way?

For Kalos, i think it generally has a whole Year-Vibe thing going on.

As you start your adventure, you see a lot of vibrant blue, pink, purple flowers. It is spring.
As you keep going, you're in more coastal towns and encounters are in normal grass. It is summer.
As you approach Laverre, the trees start going orange, and the grasses turn yellow. It is Autumn.
And once you hit Dendemille and Anistar, it is Winter (which culminates in Snowbelle City being ice).

Well there’s also the true ultimate challenge: Dragon-type. Ice is one of its very few weaknesses, so the ice environment may well be preparing you to face the mighty dragon

Oh my god, New years takes place in the middle of winter. Even the Gregorian calendar ends on a Ice level.

I think the worst part is the *bare minimum* we're asking for is to have Ice resist Ground, y'know god forbid we think about a move besides Earthquake

Ice as the first area: a quaint little snowy town (like South Park). Easy to traverse.

Bug as the final area: a complex maze full of giant spider webs, exploding egg sacks, and trap doors. (Did I just describe Hollow Knight?)

Worth noting that Dante’s Inferno also ends in ice. The ninth circle, reserved for the worst sinners and Satan, is icy and frozen

I like to think of ice-themed areas as being the end of your long journey similar to climbing a big mountain (of course, icy at the top)
Some games like Mario use volcano themes to house the final boss so that there could be lava everywhere as that is very scary!!!

Hell, Gates to infinity’s final enemy is literally just the Bitter Cold. Can’t get anymore final than that

Ice is like my second favourite type. It may not be great, but it’s a lot of fun. But it’s been getting better

To be fair, Ice is a really good offensive type, hitting a lot of things for super-effective damage. It's really common to see moves like Ice Beam or Ice Punch teched onto Pokémon for a reason. It's just defensively weak.

This is a good explanation but also, on a mechanical level, Ice type was the only type other than Dragon itself to be super effective against Dragon until gen 6. So having Ice as a penultimate challenge serves the video game design trope of giving you access to a boss's weakness just before you face it

I always love ice themes and aesthetics. I even suffer through using ice types in-game a lot. This video captures exactly what I love about the classic frozen final levels. One of my favorite videos you've done. Especially for one so short

Since this video says that winter is trecherous when you don't prepare for it, I find it funny that you can accidently prepare your team for the ice types.

Ice doesn't suck on paper. Game Freak is just bad at making them, or, knows the power they would unleash if they did. For instance, Smogon banned 3 of the 4 new Gen 9 Ice types to Ubers for being too strong: Iron Bundle and Chien-Pao just obliterated everything while Baxcalibur was pushed over the edge once gifted Scale Shot and Aroura Veil support from A-Ninetales. Cetitan, despite having mid speed, still was banned from NU, the 4th teir.

I didn’t know ice only had one resistance till now and I now fully understand how dirty ice has been done! It could at least resist grass, flying and bug since creatures and plants tend to migrate or hibernate during the winter

For once, it would be great if Ice types could be found very early on. Imagine a Pokémon game that had an Ice type regional mammal, bird, or bug.

Now imagine if Gamefreak hears all of our complaints about ice areas always being towards the end of the game and they end up basing the Gen 10 Region on Antarctica.

Considering how some ice moves can freeze you, I think they just want to avoid having to deal with that mechanic

Everyone knows the end of Pokémon is going to be the pinnacle of their evolution: a vast sea of *Krabby*

I get why people say they cant buff ice type, but like fire hits just as many pkmn super effectively and has about 3 more resistances so at this point who knows the real reason?
