Alligators are one of my favorite reptiles and since I go for this one over the crocodile, it’s because they are easier to find in the southeastern states including Florida.

I knew alligators inhabited North Carolina but I was surprised to hear they're as far north as Virginia. If I'm not mistaken, back in ancient history the only place in the U.S. where alligators existed was in the Florida everglades. Later on with the demand for new homes in Florida and the ensuing development, the alligators were robbed of much of their natural habitat. They ended up migrating to northern Florida and further north into Georgia and several other states. Is this true or have alligators always been this widespread over several southeastern states in the U.S.?

I live on a canal and found a baby gator on my shore. There was no mommy in sight. I only saw it that one time at night, never saw it again.
