00:00 Rolex (Non-)Introduction
There are just some brands in the world that need no introduction. These brands are so iconic that you can say the name, and people know exactly who you’re talking about. And it’s no different for the brand – Rolex.

00:59 Why Rolex?
→ Rolex is a status symbol.
→ They are excellent at marketing
→ And, they possess iconic deigns

First up, we’ll name a popular Rolex model then we’ll discuss some of its defining features. Before giving you three suggestions for alternative watches in these price brackets: → A “budget” category of up to $200
→ Something in the middle, up to $1000
→ And a category for alternatives over $1000

02:34 Rolex #1: Datejust
→ Timex Legacy - $150
→ Hamilton Jazzmaster - $600
→ Mega Constellation Globemaster - $7,000
→ Grand Seiko SBGH277 - $6,100

04:06 Rolex #2: Oyster Perpetual
→ Seiko SNE039 - $195
→ Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 Silicium - $375 to $750
→ Omega seamaster Aqua Terra - $5,400

05:39 Rolex #3: GMT
→ Timex Waterbury Traditional GMT - $199
→ Seiko 5 Sports SSK003 - $400 to $500
→ Tudor Black Bay GMT - $4,000

07:17 Rolex #4: Daytona
→ Rotary 1977 GS000451/02 - $160
→ Yema Rallygraf - $349

08:43 Rolex #5: Submariner
→ Casio Duro MDV106-1A - $69.95
→ Doxa Sub 200 Sharkhunter - $900
→ Omega Seamaster 300 - $5,400

As we draw our list of alternatives to a close, it’s pretty astounding to think that you could own a collection of five budget watches for less than $1000. Whatever your budget is, watches should be about enjoyment. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how much your timepiece costs. It’s that it looks good on you, and that you love wearing it.

When I was growing up my grandfather used to say to me: "Avoid status symbols like the plague." Not wanting the plague, I avoid status symbols to this day.

My Rolex is an Oyster of approx. 1941 the dealer wasn't able to determine exactly. I bought mine at a household auction, got into a pissing mach with another guy and ended up paying $151 I think. Got the watch after paying, and it was old, abused, neglected and almost junk. Got it sent into Rolex and they sent it back looking like new for $560.-ish. This was 1990-1992 ish. Now I have a Rolex that no one else does

Thanks for introducing me to watches! I really love the way chronographs look. Both the Rotary and Yema watches are definetly pieces I want to own!

I have worn the Burberry The City Chronograph watch, which I have had for over 10 years and still one of my favorites for every day use (working in the ER with repeated hand washing), back then was $500, but probably discontinued; the metal band and beveled links gives it a sparkle when light strikes the wrist. Substantial in weight but timeless without robbing your wallet.

I love that the first alt shown is a Casio Duro. I have 3 of them myself. Awesome work watches. I purchased my Milgauss solely for the anti-electric function and that sexy second hand.

I'm still crazy about Raphael's wearing a red and a blue cufflink to match the GMT. Style through and through.

Not sure why it wasn’t mentioned, but the Tudor Black Bay 58 is the Rolex Submariner by another name. I know Tudor was already mentioned for the GMT, but Omega was already mentioned for the Datejust. Definitely should have gotten a reference for the above $1K category.

where can you find the timex legacy watch in brick and mortar stores?

I love my Bulova Precisionist watches. They are well-made and battery powered. The second hand sweeps with 16 beats per second.

It's funny, I'm big into Omega. it started as getting alternatives to Rolex, but at this point I don't think I'd trade my collection at all for Rolex's offerings - even though I still think they're classic.

As an OP alternative, let me propose the Seiko SNXS79.

An automatic watch that goes for under $200, and has a look that matches the discontinued OP 39MM with the rhodium dial. I have one and would recommend it!

If you are keen on quality watches but don’t want to part with the cash it is worth checking out vintage watch stores. Most larger cities have them. Pick a reputable one. Many even provide warranties and offer great advice. You can get most high end brands for less than half of new price. We are talking about watches that are cleaned and serviced and will last a lifetime.
Avoid pawnshops because provenance is sketchy sometimes. Also buying online is risky because you don’t want to spend big bucks and discover the band doesn’t fit your wrist.
Recently purchased a Tag 2000 series. Paid $800 and I swear looks brand new. Seen them cheaper on eBay but you don’t always know what you’re buying.
Anyway it’s worth considering

Grand Seiko crafts spectacular watches, with breath-taking precision that makes Swiss watchmakers weep and the most beautiful faces in the world. Delighted to see one mentioned here.

Not really a watch enthusiast but a Timex Easy Reader works for me. I used to have a couple pocket watches but ended up donating them which I do regret now. Appreciate the content as always.

Let's see... Steinhart produce great alternatives for the Submariner and GMT Master 2. In addition they have vintage style models which would be very difficult to obtain. Long Island watch make a great alternative to the datejust. As for the daytona, I would look at Seiko Speed timer. Another GMT pick is the Baltic Aquascaphe GMT

I'm surprised you didn't include the seagull 1963, it's such a good watch for the money!

The obvious choice for a chrono is the Omega Speedmaster which is one of the most iconic chronographs ever made. I get it though, it you wanted to you could put an Omega in every category to compete with Rolex with the GMT being the only exception as Omega tends to put GMT functions on existing models for the most part and no real GMT line.

I know this is an older video, but a great alternative is the Seiko 5 Ref SRPE. Solid watch and very stylish!
