Experiencing Bulgaria's Gorgeous Capital | Sofia Travel Vlog

Sofia, Bulgaria was definitely one of our most anticipated spots of this trip, and our first day here did not disappoint! We discovered that though it's a relatively large city, many of the sights are pretty concentrated so we were able to fit a lot in a short period of time.

This made for a really fun day of exploring because just about every corner we turned was something new and amazing, whether it be the massive and beautiful Alexander Nevsky Cathedral or the Turkish barracks which the Bulgarian revolutionary Vasil Levsky hid in while evading the Ottomans who had sentenced him to hanging. It was actually at this site (the Turkish barracks) where we learned of this man and of many Bulgarian's deep respect for him. He helped initiate the movement to escape from the Ottoman rule and although he didn't live to see it happen, his efforts were not in vain and are still celebrated today.

There was even more interesting history in the Museum of Socialist Art which housed many pieces of propaganda, statues, etc. from the era of socialist rule in Bulgaria. It was quite surreal to see real monuments to the leaders of such an infamous time in recent history and the exhibition was really powerful. There really is so much to see in Sofia and way too much to fit in a single day, so expect more videos from this amazing city!

If you're new here...

Hi! We are Marshall and Sabrina, a couple from Colorado who are eager to see the world! We quit our jobs and packed our bags to pursue a life of full-time travel.

Our travels began in 2022 where we spent a month and a half navigating through new territory and adjusting to living out of a suitcase. After taking a year to build up our savings, we boarded a plane with one-way tickets to Europe!

Saint Kliment actually created the Bulgarian alphabet, which is currently written by 250 million people, starting from Serbia, going through Russia and ending up in Mongolia. And the alphabet is called Cyrillic, after his Teacher St. Cyril

Hello and thank you for showing my hometown!
Bulgaria is a country with a history spanning over 1300 years, but some of the darkest and gloomiest times for the Bulgarian people occurred after 1944 when the Soviet Union eliminated the bourgeoisie in the country. All scientists, writers, politicians, artists, and cultural figures were brutally beaten. A puppet government directly controlled by the Kremlin was established. This led Bulgaria to three national bankruptcies in the period from 1944 to 1989, significant poverty, shortages of essential goods, power rationing, and so on.
Bulgarians are extremely grateful to Russians, Ukrainians, Romanians, Estonians, Hungarians, and others who helped us break free from Turkish slavery. However, at the same time, we have witnessed many negative aspects of the Soviet Union and present-day Russia. That's why Bulgaria is supporting Ukraine so strongly these days. We've been through the same false liberation!

Why didn't you go inside the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral to look at it? You don't have to pay anything if you're not recording... The interior is worth seeing.

The territory of modern North Macedonia used to be part of Bulgaria between 700 AD - 1400 AD when the Ottomans came the population there remained Bulgarian, and only recently during the Communist era, the Macedonian ethnogenisis occured. Bulgaria after the independence from Ottoman Rule in the 1800s, fought multiple wars to free their Bulgarian breathrens in the region of Macedonia, however the story of why and how modern North Macedonia came to exist is a very complicated one...
