Batgirl is the name shared by several fictional superheroines in American comic books published by DC Comics. These characters serve as female counterparts and allies to #Batman . The first Bat-Girl, Betty Kane, was introduced in 1961 by Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff. However, in 1967, she was succeeded by #BarbaraGordon , who became the most iconic version of Batgirl. Barbara made her debut in #DetectiveComics #359 (January 1967), created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Carmine Infantino, where she was introduced as the niece and adoptive daughter of police commissioner #JamesGordon .

DC Comics is one of the oldest and largest comic book publishers in the United States, with its first title under the #DC name released in 1937. Most of its stories are set within the fictional DC Universe, home to iconic superheroes like #Superman , #Batman , #WonderWoman , #GreenLantern , #theFlash , and #Aquaman . It also features famous teams such as the #JusticeLeague , #JusticeSocietyofAmerica, #TeenTitans , and the #SuicideSquad . Alongside its heroes, the universe is known for notable villains, including the Joker, Lex Luthor, Deathstroke, Reverse-Flash, Brainiac, and Darkseid. DC Comics has also produced stories outside of the DC Universe, such as Watchmen, V for Vendetta, and Fables, as well as numerous titles under the Vertigo imprint, now continued through DC Black Label.
