How To Play Comin' Under Fire By Def Leppard - Guitar Lesson - Steve Clark

In this video I demonstrate how to play the song Comin' Under Fire by Def Leppard. This is a great track off the band's album Pyromania and features some excellent riffs from Steve Clark. Steve had a dark and brooding style that was the heart of Def Leppard and was an essential part of their style and sound. Mutt Lange worked with the band on this album and helped orchestrate and co-wrote parts that interwove Steve's guitar style and his rock/pop sensibilities that was unrivaled buy most bands of that generation. We are very fortunate to have these albums and songs to listen back to and enjoy. There will never be another player like Steve Clark. I hope you enjoy the video. Please subscribe!

Steve Clark was one of the most underrated guitarist ever. You can tell and hear what he contributed to the band. After he died they lost the leppard punch that we all know from the Clark era. He will always be my favorite guitar hero, RIP Steve. Marty, I knew you were smart and I appreciate how Steve is your idol. Cheers 👍🍺🍺

Steve Clark was an absolute effing genius at writing those riffs with chords that, while only using 2 or 3 notes, sounded bigger and more complicated than they actually were. The undertones and overtones associated with distortion had a lot to do with that, but so did the rhythmic component.
There was a philosophy prevalent at the time that if you were using distortion you should stay away from 2nds, 3rds, 6ths and 7ths because the exaggerated harmonics of the overdrive would clash and be too dissonant. Root-5th power chords were supposed to be the way to go. You were supposed to stay away from "jazz" chords if you were overdriving your tone. Thankfully Steve Clark and some others ignored this and wrote some helluva killer rock riffs.
Great video, great lesson. Way to go, dude.

I was just a teenager when High and dry came out. I still think its my favorite. But pyromania was a solid favorite also. Back then we listened in cars driving around town. I was in another room cleaning when I heard this video coming on. And I swear the tone made me come back to see if Mastodon more than I could chew was playing. I was surprised they were so close in tone. That guitar sounds fantastic. Thanks to the algorithm for bringing it here.

I grew up a huge Leppard fan and Clark has always been my favorite in the band back in the older albums. I still get choked up when watching vids about him. So sad for such an amazing player.

If only they (any band that calls itself rock) wrote songs like this nowadays. This song has always been killer. I think without Pyromania and Metal Health, there would have been no hair band strip from '86-91. Nice job, Marty!

Imo, Steve and Pete are one of the most underrated guitar duos of all time. Phil was solid too, I just really loved Steve and Pete together. Those first 2 albums had so much swagger and attitude all over em.

I love hearing you give Steve Clark props!! He and Phil were such a tandem, and Def Leppard was NEVER the same after he died!

By the way, Def Leppard finally played this song live on a Sirius XM my fav song from them!

When I saw Leppard in West Germany in 1983, Steve played right in front of me! Me and my gf, were right next to the stage! Phil Collen had his black Kramer with about 20 humbuckers on it, actually 4! 😆 It was a great concert, they played 2 on cores!😊😊❤

Def Leppard haven’t been the same since Steve passed. They were incredible when he was alive. I have everything from Leppard on physical media but I really only listen to the first 4 or 5 albums.

You nailed it once again! Great lesson Marty 🤘🏻. I’ve always loved this song too. There’s just something about the old Leppard songs that kicks ass. To me, their best songs are with Steve Clark. He always brought the dark and edgy sound to their music. Keep up the great work. Thanks again for teaching us this classic rock masterpiece.
