Ukrainian navy had struck a ship in occupied Sevastopol and confirmed that it was the Kommuna, a salvage ship. The Kommuna was launched in 1913 and is the oldest ship still in service in the Russian Navy. Also, the oldest ship in military service in the world. The main task of this vessel is to search for and raise submarines, and to conduct rescue operations to find and rescue submariners. Kommuna was used by the Russians to inspect the sunken cruiser Moskva in 2022.
The Black Sea Fleet joined Russia’s wider war on Ukraine in February 2022 with around three dozen large warships, including Kommuna. Now the Russian fleet has lost—to Ukrainian rockets, cruise missiles, drone boats and sabotage—nearly a third of the pre-war vessels. The losses include a cruiser, a submarine, a supply ship, several patrol boats, two missile corvettes and at least six landing ships. But the damage to Kommuna might sting the most.
