🎯 Prevent new data spoiling the look of your pivot table by stopping your PivotTable changing columns widths when you refresh it!

Once you get a pivot table looking good the last thing you want is for a pivot table refresh to change pivot table column widths. This is why you should disable pivot table column width refresh and prevent column autofit on refresh. I will demonstrate how to fix column widths in pivot tables and keep the pivot table cell width constant in this Excel PivotTable tutorial. Once you disable pivot table column autofit you will fix pivotable column width and therefore fix pivot table width entirely.

One of the things that used to annoy me about pivot tables was I get it set up looking great and then so maybe I'd do something like this where I say well I'm going to wrap the text on the text on those headers bring them all down ever so slightly double click there yeah that looks pretty good and then I'd hit right click refresh the numbers and it's like well that's annoying this is now jumped out of our sequence because it's just got wider again and it's actually very very simple to correct for this all you do is you go on to the options and there is one of the format options is auto fit columns on update and if you uncheck that and make sure you still got the preserve cell formatting then when I go to change the width of this column I've got all my columns the exact width I want so let's say that right now when i refresh we don't get the column widths jumping around which is ideal so that's a simple tip on how you can stop columns auto expanding once you've got your table looking the way you want you've been watching up for excel where we're going to get your Excel skills up and your task times down you can download the spreadsheet by clicking on the link in the description see you soon.

How do you set column widths if it is every other column and multiple repeating columns like for weekly results? i need to set every other column to a width.

this doesn't seem to work for me. I'm in using a pivot via data model from power query. I'm assuming that is why.

my issue is that when I select details in the pivot table by double clicking the figures in it, it completely messes up the column widths, even with preserve formatting ticked and autofit unticked
