These detective based missions were brought from AC Unity. It had similar missions where Arno had to investigate dead body and find culprit. But in AC Syndicate, I feel more Sherlock Holmes now. I like his stories. And AC series must have these kind of missions as the protagonists have Eagle Vision which makes them superior to others in terms of finding culprit.
