I'm sure I remember something about a white collar crime being committed in space, when an astronaut on board the ISS was buying things online using her ex-partner's credit card. I wonder what the legal process was there..

"In space, no one can hear you testify."

That sounds way cooler than it has any business sounding.

For that murder I'd also say its an important reminder of regularly maintaining gear so it stays safe to use.

This explains why the crew of the Enterprise was able to get up to so many shenanigans.

"Space Law" sounds like something that Hollyweird could take on in a movie or TV series. However, The Law in such series as "The Expanse" is maintained by members of the space station security force. So, it's sorta like the19th century Wild West or the movie "Outland" (1981). Anyone for the ISSP of "Cowboy Bebop" which uses Bounty Hunters to take care of really troublesome outlaws?

Okay before the dude died I was thinking the "legal murder" would be the homemade booze-making dude would poison the next batch, knowing the other dude would steal it again and drink it. Now I wonder if that WOULD be legal.

Hey Simon, please, please, please do a Casual Criminalist video on James Mitchell "Mike" DeBardeleben. The other day you mentioned that the Secret Service in the US is responsible for investigating money counterfeiting crimes on the Casual Criminalist, which made me think of DeBardeleben. He was a prolific counterfeiter, so much so that the Secret Service gave him a nickname: "the mall passer". When they finally caught and arrested him, the Secret Service agents found a lot more than counterfeit money. Together with the FBI he was charged with a whole litany of crimes (he wasn't even prosecuted for most of them). He was sent to prison for life and the agents who investigated him said that he committed just about every felony on the books.
Anyone interested in the story should read Stephen Michaud's book "Beyond Cruel" which is the definitive resource (that I've found anyway) on DeBardeleben. The audiobook is good too.

"in space, no one can hear you testify" and the idea of being a space lawyer sounds like a really interesting premise for a movie or show, go get a netflix deal :P They are desperate right now, so they might just take you up on it

You missed one of your earlier points. The Uniform Code of Military Justice (which you referred to early on) covers US Service members no matter where they may be from DC to Andromeda Galaxy. As at least an intermediate step, I’d investigate whether or not US Military Contractors could sign an employment addendum to be ruled by the UCMJ while outside other civilian jurisdictions.

My brain's way of thinking about how complicated anything like this should be allowed to get:

UN: "Of which nationality is the killer, and which of that was the victim?"

Them: "The killer, [Nationality]. The victim, [Nationality]."

UN: "From which of that/those nation(s) are they from?"

Them: "The killer, The victim,

UN: "Does the immediate family of the victim live there?"

Them: "Yes/No."

UN: "Well in any case, loss of life has been suffered by at least one person here, due to [involuntary manslaughter]. The laws should be applied in congruence to those of the country and both the killer and the victim belong wherein. The killer would have the book thrown at them accordingly(: If any one party is of separate origin, in negotiated terms of agreeable compromise between outcomes after trials in each their own respective legal jurisdictions -- that of the killer's, that of the victim's, and that of the plaintiff's (the immediate family) -- which would proceed in a final trial by jury, populated half-and-half / third-third-and-third with those of similar national and relevance to each side of the case, with a judge of the same nationality and as that of the victim or plaintiff)."

....

Alas, I remain shaky about the final stipulation, regarding the judge (the law) with the final say. Perhaps there could be two, or even three judges if need be -- one from where the killer is from, the other from where victim's from, and the third from where the family is from -- and they would negotiate an agreeable sentencing..

It would be expensive, but it could also be formulaic.
