As a Florida cyclist, there are many risks of riding a bike with no uninsured motorist insurance. There are even more reasons you should stack it.

So why should you buy stacked uninsured motorist coverage in Florida, if you only have one vehicle on your policy? This issue of buying uninsured motorist coverage is confusing to most people. Insurance is something we don't want to use, but the problem is in Florida, you should never ride a bicycle or e-bike without having UM coverage on your auto policy because it protects you from being hit by a driver with no insurance or not enough. First, the question is how much uninsured motorist insurance should you buy? Jim recommends that you have no less than $100,000 under any circumstances but recommends $250,000 or more because any injuries after a crash that requires surgery will typically cost more than $100,000.

The next question is, should I buy stacked or unstacked? A stacked policy works in a pretty straightforward fashion. If you have two cars on the same policy and you buy stacked UM, it doubles the available uninsured motorist for each person. So a $100,000/$300,000 policy would become a $200,000/$600,000 policy, meaning each individual would be protected up to $200,000, but they would share a $600,000 if there were multiple people, and no one would receive more than $200,00. But, what if you only have one car in the household, should you still stack it? The answer is "yes." When you stack UM it broadens the area of application. There are so many situations where you need stacked UM to get the full benefit of the policy that you have. This comes up most frequently, where you are an occupant of another person's vehicle and they have a crash. You're going to have the best opportunity to get the most coverage if you have stacked UM when you're considering what goes with another policy. That's just one example. There are many, many examples.

One thing you need to know is that if you get UM on your auto policy, there's going to be a small upcharge to increase it from what you have, maybe $50. You might have a $50,000/$100,000 or a $100,000/$200,000. I would always say, pay the upcharge and get $100,000/$300,000 and stack it if you can. If you can afford it, get $250,000/$500,00 and stack it.
