Richter scale is used to measure the magnitude of earthquake using a seismograph, expressed in numbers. And Mercalli scale measures the intensity of earthquake(observation based) which depends on many factors like magnitude, destruction caused by it, expressed in Roman numbers I to XII like Strong, very strong etc.
