Wife drove to Walgreens last week, went in and came to find a large black SUV having smashed into the side of her car with no driver to be seen. My wife took photos, noticed the car was in neutral. Shortly a woman came out said it was her car, then said it’s not my fault, I wasn’t driving! She lost that debate!!!

Thank you for making this video! I love your FSD coverage because it shows the good the bad and the ugly which makes you far more of an outlier than I think you should be. Most people either focus on nothing but good or nothing but bad and it is honestly a little difficult to get a full picture.

You've missed one downside to this incident, you family is never going to forget how your trust of Full Self Driving led to this incident. They will be needling you about this for as long as you shall live.

I gotta be honest, when I used the FSD trial I found it to make more mistakes than I had expected. And it turned itself off in bright sun so I feel your pain. Sorry it happened to you

I hate this move to low profile tires.

Here in Kansas City, Missouri the potholes are so bad that we often play the game, "is it a pothole or a puddle?". Sometimes we're right and sometimes we're wrong, but it goes without saying that our sphincters clench up every time we go over a puddle!

I know exactly what you are trying to say. You aren't saying they will be legally responsible, but the system needs to improve its understanding of road imperfections and material changes. It needs to know that there is a pothole or that some intersections have huge dips bigger than most for water runoff, and it needs to be able to see those. It doesn't mean it is useless, but there is still work to do before this thing is ready for you to not pay attention. In a perfect world, you would see everything, and the streets would be perfect without any adverse conditions. But that's not the world we live in.

This situation shows that cameras will never lead to full self driving.

My car has hit curbs, rocks, and potholes, accelerated rapidly in curves, and bottomed out in a drainage path. Despite being alert, my reaction time wasn't sufficient. Fighting the wheel adds delay and hinders sudden moves due to other cars and obstacles.

And this is why Tesla FSD (Level 2) is overhyped. Its a neat parlor trick, but far from ready for primetime. Its hilarious to use on roads in New England.

In "the old days", when tires still had sidewalls whose height was measured with rulers instead of micrometers, a tire would have hit that pothole, deformed its shape instantly enough to accommodate the rising square edge of the pothole, and eased on down the road without blinking its eyes. Many many drivers of performance models of Teslas have had sidewall damage and wheel damage from potholes that an old Michelin-X steel belted true radial would have rolled across undamaged. Current "radials" are really bias-belted tires, with fairly thin sidewalls, only made stiff enough to handle without the initial lateral slewing the old true radials exhibited as the set itself into a turn. When crimped against the rim by a sharp pothole, they fail. Teslas should probably have run-flat tires as standard equipment, since they have no spare, but that would somewhat reduce range, so the best option is to order the car with the smallest wheels available for its model, to at least get "some" road hazard protection from the reality of our crumbling roadways.

100% Agree with you on tracing the left lane.

Sadly where I live, I won’t use FSD just bc there are too many potholes to blow a tire

I feel for you young man. We have our share of potholes in my neck of the woods, too. I'm probably on target for a similar unflattering tire flattening in my own future.

One thing that I have disliked about Tesla’s (just in general, not saying the products or company directly do this) is how damn toxic the community can often be. You were spot on when you mentioned how everyone is so excited to show off all the cool things the cars can do, but the moment it messes up the blame immediately goes to the driver and they are then dog piled on for even mentioning anything negative. No amount of understanding is allotted to them by the hardcore fanboys. The amount of gaslighting I see within it is insane.

Pretty crappy situation, so sorry that happened to you. I was very happy with that 1 month free trial because it gave me the opportunity to try out FSD one time and I quickly realized that NOPE it’s not at a place yet that I feel is good enough to pay for and use consistently.

FSD is imperfect. That isn’t to say it won’t get better, but regardless, It sucks that this happened. I’m glad y’all are alright, that’s what matters most in all this

One of the things I don’t like about FSD and autopilot is that it typically drives directly in the center of the lane, right over the most worn out, beat-up part of the lane where all the other cars drive. If you’re just a little off-center in the lane, the road is much smoother. AP/FSD seems to be completely blind to road imperfections, random debris that falls off cars, and potholes.

I've always felt FSD rides WAY too close to the right edge of a lane. It feels like it's going to hurt the curb all the time

Center of the lanes as opposed to near the centerline is the main related reason for ALL issues I have had in FSD

I'm actually surprised that pot hole caused so much damage. Makes me want to be a bit more cautious about pot holes on the highway now...

Like I said on your X post, I think this is just a case of extremely bad luck
