Tráthnóinín aoibhinn grianmhar,
Is mé suite ansiúd im aonar,
Is mé ag breathnú amach ar Árainn,
A bhí go hálainn uaim ó dheas,
Mar a raibh an cuain is íochtar spéire,
Is iad ag síneadh lena chéile,
Ní fhaca mé in aon áit fós,
Aon radharc a bhí chomh deas.

Ar seachrán a chuaigh mo smaointe,
Is nár smaoiníos ar an bpointe,
Ar na laochra móra millteach’,
Bhíodh ag bádóireacht fadó,
Ó Luan go maidin Domhnaigh,
Ag dul amach le luchtaí móna,
Gan neach ar bith dá gclúdach
Tríd an mbáisteach is tríd an gceo.

Iad ag éirí leis an taoille,
Sa samhradh agus sa ngeimhreadh,
Iad ag coimhlint lena chéile,
Nó go ndíolfaidís an mhóin,
Ó, is a Dhia nach mór an feall é,
An tseantrádáil sin bheith bailithe,
Is ag breathnú amach inniu air,
Nach í an chaoláire atá ciúin.

Iad ag seoladh ina scórtha,
Báid bheaga agus báid mhóra,
Iad feistithe amach is cóirithe,
Is iad réitithe thar barr,
Thríd na tonnta móra géara,
Bhíodh ag bagairt ar a chéile,
Dhá ngrinniú is dhá n-éileamh,
Is gan eatarthu ach na cláir.

Ó molaimse go deo iad,
Mar b’iontach an dream seoil iad,
Thrí fharraigí is thrí fheothan,
Gan aon fhaitíos, gan aon bheann,
Mar tá sean-nós na mbáid mhóra,
Fágtha anois ag na daoine óga,
Mar thug na laochra móra siúd,
An traidisiún sin dá gclann.

Ó Ghlinsce aniar go Carna,
Is ó Chuigéal soir go Bearna,
Ó feicfidh tú an-gheallta,
A thógfaidh suas do chroí,
Beidh siad fós i gConamara,
Oileáin Árann is Cinn Mhara,
Nár dheas iad a thabhairt faoi deara,
Is iad ag seoladh leis an ngaoth.

Bhí an ghrian is í fós ag scaladh,
Ar mhuir agus ar thalamh,
Is mé ag breathnú ar an gcaladh,
Is ar an radharc a bhí amach romhaim,
Is cé nach raibh aon bhád ag seoladh ann,
Bhí ceolta ’gus glórtha ann,
Bhí misneach is bhí seanbhádóirí,
Faoi lánseol fós sa gcuan.

A pleasant sunny afternoon,
While I sat out there alone,
As I looked out at Árainn,
That was beautiful to the South of me,
Where the harbor and the horizon were,
Stretching towards each other,
I haven’t yet seen in any place,
Any sight that was as nice.

My thoughts went straying,
And didn’t I think right then,
About the great and mighty heroes,
That were boating long ago,
From Monday to Sunday,
Going out with loads of turf,
Without anyone covering them
Through the rain and through the fog.

Rising with the tide,
In the summer and the winter,
Competing with each other,
To sell the turf,
Oh, and God isn’t it a great shame,
The old trade to be gone,
And looking out upon it today,
Isn’t the inlet quiet.

Sailing by the score,
Small boats and large boats,
Trimmed and fixed up,
Completely prepared,
Through the large sharp waves,
They were threatening each other,
Observing and demanding,
And nothing between them but boards.

I extol them forever,
For they were an amazing bunch of sailors,
Through oceans and winds,
Without any worry or concern,
For the old tradition of the large boats,
Has been left now to the young people,
For those great heroes gave,
That tradition to their children.

From Glinsc in the west to Carna,
And east from Chuigéal to Barna,
Oh you will see such races,
That would lift your heart up,
They will still be in Connemara,
The Aran Islands and Kinvara,
Wouldn’t it be nice to notice them,
As they sail with the wind.

The sun was still shining,
On the sea and on the land,
As I was looking out on the harbour,
And on the sight that was before me,
And though there was no boat sailing there,
There was music and voices there,
There was bravery and old boatmen,
Under full sail in the harbor.
