Do you think one of the reasons tenzin chose a non-bender over an earth bender was because it would make his kids more likely to be airbenders? He wouldn’t have to compete with an earth ending gene? I mean in his own siblings with water/air parents only 1/3 was an air bender. He felt a lot of responsibility to replenish the air nation single handedly

Of course there are different styles of waterbending. You have to remember that the Northern and Southern Tribes are far from each other. Because of this, they've developed their own styles (think of it like how the Korean language in North and South Korea are different because of how they both developed; South Korea's dialect was influenced by American English while North Korea's remains traditional).
While Tonraq is from the North, just living in the South he became accustomed to using the Southern style. Which is aggressive and offensive, while the Northern style is more on the defense and strategic. And then there's the Foggy Swamp Style, which is using a wetland typically deemed as worthless to one's advantage
