Have a strong center to hold the enemy and then flank while the center retreats to fully envelope the enemy making their number superiority useless

You use this tactic so your other squads can encircle the enemy. If you just do it with one squad, of course it won't work

Usually your troops are locked into combat but with give ground they’re not. So it allows to make an escape/retreat. Very useful when used right.

Yea clearly the formation desighned to make the enemy expose themselves to flanking is trash because if it's a straight up fight it's a negative

It's not useless, you just have to know how to use it in tandem with another attacking unit and you can force a nasty flank attack by drawing the enemy in a few steps into a better angle. It's not meant for you to march backwards the entire battle😂😂😂😂
