I instantly gained respect for the judge when he asked " whats in your best interest? "

What’s in your best interest - the judge asking that is the first time anybody asked Fiona about HER.

Fiona, while she wasn’t perfect, tried her hardest to take care of her siblings. She fought for them hard. Then when she fell apart, aside from Carl and some of Ian, they turned on her. It was sad how they did her.

The judge saying "now hold on, wait a minute..." showed you he was a man of character. It wasn't just about the other kids to him, it was about ALL of the kids, Fiona included.

Sad part is that while the judge was telling Fiona the truth about raising the kids, she doesn't really have a choice. It's eithet leave them to Frank to ruin or she tries to gove them some normalcy.

2:54 the judge asking Fiona "what's in YOUR best interest" hit me hard as fck.
This is sad that nobody has EVER asked her this in her entire. life.

The fact that the writer's decimated this family genuinely breaks my heart. The way half the kids end up resenting or hating Fiona, how she ends up abandoning them too, this version of them would NEVER.

It makes me sad how she fought for them and they all turned their backs on her so quickly when she was down.

But neglect IS a form of abuse. Most common form, actually

I loved that judge! There was no perfect fix for their situation, but I loved that he gave Fiona another perspective to think about. Even though it meant putting herself and wants first, he thought enough of what the situation could look like for her down the road and brought it to her attention so she wouldn't have to look back (regardless of her decision) and ask, "Why did didn't anyone tell me?".

That judge should’ve also awarded child support, even if he got to retain his rights as a father. She is their guardian, and he should be financially responsible with a court order to get a job and support them.

This is the reality for most oldest siblings. The eldest brother or sister becomes the bonus father or mother figure for the younger children

And then she leaves the show and they suddenly all forget who is their legal guardian. It was so stupid.

As someone who can relate to Fiona a lot, my younger siblings would come first. If the parents can't provide, as their older sister I would 100% step up and take care of them. Even with the youngest being 8, my husband and I absolutely adore my siblings and would move heaven and earth for them.

The judge basically said she proved neglect but not abuse. IMO neglect is abuse.

This is one of the many reasons I dislike Frank and Monica (but mostly Frank since he is there all the time and he is the reason why Fiona had to make this choice).
He had all these kids and left the responsibility of raising kids on the shoulders of a child who too didnt know how to raise Kids. And while Fiona did mess up, I dont blame her for taking the kids. It was either this or send them back to those orphan/foster homes, and if I was in Fiona shoes, after what I saw what happened to Debbie, no way.

I really feel like this scene captured the burden of caregivers. The "What's in your best interest?" line hits hard when you're a caregiver. You never get the opportunity to consider what's best for you (and even if you do, it's usually not compatible with being a caregiver so you have no choice but to dismiss it).

And then a few years later when Fiona has her world fall apart and hits her lowest point, these ungrateful little bastards give her the boot! Over something that really wasnt her fault.

This scene was one of the most powerful ones it really showed how Fiona has really been taking care of everyone from such a young age no child should ever be put in a position like that
