Why I Use Disappearing Messages

In today’s digital world, nothing is truly secure. Imagine waking up to find that a hacker had posted every conversation you’ve ever had online. We don't need to keep a permanent trail of all of our digital conversations, that could be hacked at any time, and there are deep psychological effects when we do so.

In this video, I make a case for using disappearing messages.

Whether we’re safeguarding sensitive information, limiting our exposure, or simply reducing the clutter of our digital lives, turning on disappearing messages is a small change with significant impact. Disappearing messages are a great tool in your privacy toolbox for this increasingly permanent digital age.

Peopel thought I was crazy trying to be extra secure online and now people are finally seeing why 10 yrs later. Just because you wish to have privacy does not mean you are up to no good. That's what a lot of places do not understand.

The false sense of security needs to be stressed more to users wanting to use this feature. It's a handy feature, but it does NOT guarantee that the message isn't saved by another means. This type of feature is great for stopping mass automated storing of messages, but if you're sending messages to someone who may not be fully trustworthy, they can still store the whole convo. As long as the user goes forward knowing that, then it's fine. (not talking about any service in particular and yes I get that some services store everything local, but the user should understand exactly how a feature can fall short, to not get a false sense of security)

This is an Excellent Video. It has brought hitherto, unknown issues to my attention and offered straightforward and workable solutions to myself and many others.

The only way to stay safe is NOT TO TELL anything sensitive online. Ever. There are IRL, direct conversations for this. I'm aware that anything I send online might become public and there's no way to prevent it 100%. It's like with car accidents. We drive carefully, safely, we do everything we can for the safety yet - we still have to have insurance. Because accidents happen. Private messages will eventually leak.

I'd love to see collaboration between the privacy enthusiasts. Have you considered contacting other channels such as Rob Braxman Tech, The Hated One, etc? The AI/NPU tidal wave is a tren injection to the strong arm of surveillance. People need your informative channels now more than ever. You have my subscription. Keep up the good work!

I came across your channel by chance and I absolutely love it! Thank you that you exist!

I would love to see a video dedicated to the following issue - as someone who is privacy conscious, I have decided to gradually implement what I've learn from your videos. However, I'm haunted by a nagging feeling that I've already shared too much about my life online - contacts, location, patterns, photos, texts, videos, etc.

As far as I know, it is impossible to remove such information from the internet (I don't believe the companies who make such promises) and for me it's an actual concern/regret, as well as an excuse not to take any steps, i.e. "If they already have everything about me, why bother?!"

What damage does irremovable past data do?

Why is it still worth to set up your systems for privacy?

May the Force be with you!

Discord is really bad for this sorta stuff, it’s why I’d never msg anything in it that isn’t just straight up related to the discord channel (aka tv/games). They should really add a way to delete all ur msgs or something of the like in it.

Naomi failed to mention disappearing messages are ONLY deleted on your device(s), not on the service providers storage in many cases. A deeper dive into this issue would be useful.

I imagine using Google messeges even if the messages disappear, Google probably still keeps them

Actually I don't even think they give you the option

That philosophy part is interesting. I have a conflict between open sharing as beneficial and also harmful. I feel like until the creepers stop creeping, I'm going to be cautious.
