Sadly some individuals, in the trans support group I used to attend, did use cisgender as a slur. One of many reasons I stopped attending. It was a toxic environment. Which is sad in and of itself. Most of the time though it is just a method of differentiating. Like you said it's definitely not a perfect word, but it's what we have right now.

Instead of saying this person is a transwoman this person is a cis woman, it's better to say this person is a transwoman and this person is a female.

I think it's better to ask someone how they prefer to be addressed because its direct & avoids unitentionally hurting someone's feelings.

Thank you. I do have a problem. There are many groups of trans/gay have used it as a derogatory term. I was jumped on (verbally) by several of the lesbian comm. who berated me as cis and homophobic because I thought it was inappropriate for someone to introduce themself as a lesbian without even giving their name on a subject that was supposed to be about animal husbandry. It was like, hi, I'm a lesbian, here's what to do with this sheep. I suggested it was proper to use your name or title to introduce yourself. I cannot believe the backlash. I didn't call anyone anything. The fact that she was lesbian was irrelevant to me. If it had come up in her talk, fine. I've worked amicably with members of LGBTQ with no problems with mutual respect. (Sorry this is so long. It really disturbed me.) The point is, cis seems to be a derogatory term (at least at times). I don't want conflict. I've been avoiding anything that hints of LGBTQ. What am I missing? I feel uncomfortable saying anything here.
