Airports are not simple enough. They should just paint big wide yellow strips of paint where drivers can easily see where passengers are ready to be picked up, with the understanding that arriving passengers walk to the yellow areas, thus reducing any anxiety and confusion while being picked up. Even down to the design of color of the building, a dark grey building and then only use bright colors for arrival/departure areas make it so much easier and safer.
