I do have to say; Buttered beer is an actual recipe that was popular in medieval England. It was first published in the The Good Huswifes Jewell: To make Buttered Beere. Take three pintes of Beere, put five yolkes of Egges to it, straine them together, and set it in a pewter pot to the fyre, and put to it halfe a pound of Sugar, one penniworth of Nutmegs beaten, one penniworth of Cloves beaten, and a halfepenniworth of Ginger beaten, and when it is all in, take another pewter pot and brewe them together, and set it to the fire againe, and when it is readie to boyle, take it from the fire, and put a dish of sweet butter into it, and brewe them together out of one pot into an other.

Having tried butter beer a number of times, my family and I have developed our own recipe that tastes spot on to Universal's and is really easy. The base is cream soda and to that we add a mixture of lightly whipped heavy cream and butterscotch sundae syrup. We then add to the cup with a little extra of the whipped cream mixture. For a frozen version we just partially freeze the cream soda, and if we were to make it taste any more like universal, we would probably change the cream to half heavy cream and half sweetened condensed milk.

Ingredients:
1/2 c. Heavy Cream (or Heavy Cream + Sweetened Condensed Milk) Whipped
2 tbsp. Butterscotch Syrup
2 Liters Cream Soda (cold or partway frozen)

My mouth just dropped in shock and stayed that way. I'm on the other side of the world. Literally on the other end of the world from where this book was written, and I had the first book read to me by my (admittedly emigrated Scottish) teacher, who brought it back after it came out in the UK in 1998 (having it read to us, not the publication date)

I honestly just made this yesterday -- two parts apple cider, heated with about eight tablespoons butterscotch syrup. Add one part ginger beer. It's so good, honestly. Sharp taste, but yummy.

If it makes Ben feel any better, I have never ready any of the books either and I have only seen the first movie. In fact Ben's live read was the first Harry Potter book I have ever "read". Btw, great job on the read, love it!
