I really enjoyed this one! Especially that they actually used German actors. The bilingualism of this movie was awesome.

The Hitler that Ulrich Matthes portrays here is truly terrifying. Btw, he also played Joseph Goebbels in Downfall.

One other thing about this movie as well, is that I think there is a bit of warning in it. Firstly because it is set before WW2, before it all happened. And because the way that Lena describes Hitler in 1932, actually resembles what some people nowadays say about some more populist right-wing parties in Europe. We should not think that this can never happen again. And I was also thinking about the current situation in Ukraine.

I'm gonna watch this, seems intriguing. I like tinker tailor soldier spy, but I don't think it's based on real events. If I had to pick one based on history, well, I think it was called "6 days", about the Iranian embassy in Britain being held hostage in 1980. Thanks Chris!

Thanks Chris. I will watch it . You’ve become the benchmark that guides my watching movies or series : anything below 3, 5 couches is discarded …
PS : I loved Archive81 ! Best serie of the past 12 months ?

Watching season 4 Ozark right now. Watch this next!

I got to see Scream and it was good! Archive 81 was excellent!

Can you believe they split season 4 of Ozark into 2 parts omg why. I just finished part 1. Part 2 is 7 episodes also. I hope it’s not a long wait. Now do I watch a tragedy of Macbeth or that Munich on brink of war movie? Which one do you recommend first?

Ozark had me sitting on the edge of my seat! It’s been a major 5 star series for me.

I usually like your reviews but surprised you didn't comment on the improbability of the entire scenario.

I personally love Official Secrets (2019), and I'm not even a fan of Keira Knightley! Thought the performances in the film were great and the screenplay kept me on edge since I've never heard of the case before.

This is one of the best films I have seen in a long time. Absolutely fantastic acting and created a sense of genuine suspense despite knowing how what then end result is (I have studied WW2 extensively as part of my education). I saw someone else mention Tinker Sailor Soldier Spy. That is a good comparison. It's a fictional story grounded in real events, keeping close enough to have a sense of realism, but it's not pretending to be a historical biography. Does it make Chamberlain look better than the history books presented him? Yes. But history is written by the victors and Churchill was very much the victor. My younger sisters (both Cambridge grads, but not not interested in history both through this was based on a real life story, which I guess means that it is convincing.
Having watched the film I then read the book, I highly recommend that too, although the suspense is less.

I was also puzzled by their casting choice of Hitler, but he gets better as the movie goes on because he is clearly a psychopath and isn't afraid to let others know it.

This movie sounds interesting. My favorite historical thriller Is ALLIED with Brad Pitt. I like your hair too. It reminds me of Pitt's character War Daddy from FURY.

Interesting, we will have to watch it, war buffs :)

I enjoyed it and like Robert Harris, but the Neville Chamberlain revisionism is almost certainly untrue. It's true that Britain and France were probably not militarily prepared for war in 1938 (France obviously wasn't in 1940 either), and Chamberlain had also instituted major spending into a national aerial defence programme - which became vital over the skies in Britain in 1940 (something he doesn't get a fair credit for). But there's no evidence that he signed the Munich Agreement, to buy time for the Allies, in order to bring in the US (and the world) if Hitler acquiesced on the agreement.

Chamberlain, like most world leaders of the time (including Roosevelt) thought appeasement was the best policy. They didn't want a repeat of WW1 and the devastation it had wrought. There is something noble in that, but he was wrong and also vain enough to loftily declare to Britain and the world that he had bought 'peace for our time'. The world leaders who signed the Munich Agreement essentially sold Czechoslovakia down the river for a full invasion, which also gave Hitler the green light for then aggressively invading huge chunks of continental Europe.

There is also the argument that if the world powers of the time hadn't appeased Hitler in the late 1930's - ie been more militarily belligerent to any threat of Nazi invasions - he may well have been taken out by certain anti-Nazi Germans in the military, or corridors of power, who also didn't want to engage in another world war.

The "bought time" narrative this movie tries to spin kind of perplexes me. Yeah, it bought time for Germany. Chamberlain's strategy of "appeasement" is pretty much universally looked back upon as a giant mistake and a huge black stain on his legacy. It's his defining failure. Germany was not ready for war in 1938, but Hitler called Chamberlain and the other world leader's bluff, knowing they were all so desperate to avoid another war.

Remember, Germany's military and economy was decimated by the Treaty of Versailles. When Hitler started re-arming Germany he was starting from a point that was WAY behind the rest of Europe. If anyone needed an extra year, it was Germany.

This was fantasy and quite naive and unrealistic. Just two things bugged me. 1. As someone of African descent I felt slightly embarrassed at the presence of a random black man in Neville Chamberlain's inner circle. He seemed to have no function apart from being a token black person to comply with Netflix policy of twisting the truth to try to kiss my behind. It's disgusting and insulting. Tell the truth or don't tell it at all. The other was an Indian descent secretary being given more importance than could every have been possible in that time period and in fact a person like this would never have been part of that group. The story itself was ludicrous, particularly the scene with the possibility of someone getting that close to Hitler with a gun. It was a typical puerile attempt to rewrite history to pander to a woke generation. Rubbish.
