I put mine up perfectly with zero measuring. Just use painters tape and align the holes.

Don't you need to measure the curtain gathering to see where you screw the 1st bracket ?

Sometimes though, you might have bought an expanding curtain rail. That will mean that one bracket will have to be a little higher than the other one (I see the ones here are movable so that would allow for vertical adjustments to be made)
