Finnish M05 Sleeping Bag From Carinthia/Varusteleka

My review of the Finnish M05 Sleeping bag, made by Carinthia and sold by Varusteleka.

I have used this bombproof, warm three season sleeping bag for six months now, from the Alaskan wilderness to winter in the Brecon Beacons. I talk about the Specifications of the bag, what I see as it's pros and cons, and how I see it being best used.

The sleeping bag is sold on the Varusteleka website, at the time of release the camo version of this bag was sold out.

Hi there. Finnish army member here. Our bigger tents have a wood stove in the middle and boys and girls are sleeping around that feet towards the stove. That is the reason for that foot end protection. That Savotta tent is meant for about 15 persons, so it is a big tent and a big stove.
And one more thing. Army doesn't use that M05 camo in sleeping bags. Just that Carinthia olive greenish brown (it is cheaper). That M05 camo we have in our clothes. Cheers from Finland.

Varusteleka also had a Dutch bivy that was the same style, front opening and perfect for this bag. I grabbed that and had my wife put a zipper and the two work awesome together. The only minor, but as Mr. Pathfinder mentioned, it covers up the awesome camo. :( Oh well, small price to pay.

Thanks for this review, I have yet to use mine at a temp worthy of it. Weather in Alberta here has been up and down. Still waiting for a chance.

I flat out love mine but, unless the temps are below freezing it's almost too warm a bag! It is by far the most unique bag out there and the cool factor is off the charts.

Great review Tom. That MO5 is a pretty sweet camo. That spark proof bottom is interesting as well.

While I generally prefer treated down quilts for general camping, primarily due to the size and weight savings for comparable warmth, I have the regular version of this bag(Defence 4) and love it. The "lower limit" rating of -15C/5F is spot on for me. So far the coldest I've taken it was -13C/8F in conjunction with an Exped Dura 5R pad and Dutch hooped bivy. I was acceptably comfy all night. Combined with their Tropen bag it's supposedly good to extremely low temps.

It is a bit bulky but so well built I also don't have to baby it like some of my lighter weight stuff.

The colder you go, the more you carry so it's not strange to have a larger sleep system. I've got a wind breaker in that pattern and I love it.

Carinthia .. used by the Finns and from Varusteleka .. then it must be good 😊.
'Camouflage' Patterns .. another advantage is that they do not 'show dirt and stains' as readily as the bland fabrics .. especially trouser fronts 😊.

Nice bag. I’ve used down and in even a slight damp conditions had problems and mummy bags are so restrictive unless they are centre zips, which I prefer, easier to get out of. Still use my 90 ptn for the winter and spring in Northumberland. 2kg not too bad for a good nights dry and warm sleep

I need a good winter bag actually, needs to be roomy as I’am a bit of a lump and can’t bare being constricted.
