The Value of this sleeping bag will impress you!

This is the Carinthia Defence 1 and when it comes to a synthetic sleeping bag, in my opinion this is a no brainer.

The quality is top notch, the temp rating is excellent, it’s a versatile bag that can be added to other defence bags to create very low temp sleep systems.

Carinthia Defence 1 Sleeping Bag Review

Price : $117 for the Medium, $123 for the Large

Color : Olive

Temp Range : Comfort Range 39F, Extreme 14F

Sizes : Medium and Large sizes

Measurements :
Size Rec. height Length Width* Weight Comp. size
Medium. Up to 6' 1" 7' 0.5" 33.5" 2.3 lb 7" x 10"
Large Up to 6' 7" 7' 6.5" 34.5" 2.64 lb 7" x 11"

*Measured at shoulder height

Materials :
Shellproof outer shell - a lightweight, hard-wearing, ripstop reinforced and specially treated polyamide which is both wind and waterproof (1000 mm), yet breathable.

Shelltrans lining - a soft to the skin ripstop reinforced polyamide with excellent moisture-wicking capabilities keeps you comfortable through the night.

Thermoflect, a very thin, very lightweight aluminium material that reflects body heat. Thermoflect raises the sleeping bags heat-retaining capacity by about 11 %.

G-Loft filling - Carinthia's own, in-house "hollow-fibre", made in Austria. Highly compressible, excellent weight-insulation ratio and also moisture resistant, meaning that it will work even under long-term use in damp conditions.

Defence 1 uses single layered, lightweight G-Loft filling. In this lightweight design, the outer shell is loosely attached to the bag.

The G-LOFT Plus filling is quilted to an insulating scrim. As a result, an additional air pocket is formed between the quilted insulation layer and the shell, yet no cold seams can occur.

Features :
Two way zippers
Bag is designed to have enough space in the bottle of the bag for shoe bag or extra clothing
Designed for military purposes but luckily it isn’t so overly built that it can’t be use by civilians.
Zipper Baffle
Mummy Shape

Carinthia :
Carinthia is a well-known sleeping bag and existence gear manufacturer. Outside of their homeland Austria they have equipped many European countries, including Scandinavia and our very own Finnish Defence Forces too! Carinthia manufactures their products in Moldova.

My experiences :
Before moving to the pros and cons, I want to share my experiences with this bag;

I have been testing this out for a good part of the spring and summer and to say that I have been impressed is an understatement.

The coldest conditions that I have used this bag are down to 40F which is basically the rating of this bag and I was incredibly comfortable. With regular clothing for myself, I go even lower temp wise and be comfortable and in the future I will have a followup review discussing the performance in that regards.

Review Pros :
Awesome quality
Impressive price
True Temp Rating
Very warm
Very durable Bag
Fairly lightweight for being a military bag
Fairly compressible with a reasonable stuff size
Excellent military grade materials
Can be used with other Defence sleeping bags to create extremely warm sleep systems.
Smooth zippers

Review Cons :
Obvious : not the smallest or the lightest bag but one should expect this with the bag being designed for military purposes

Summary :
When it comes to a synthetic sleeping bag, in my opinion this sleeping bag is a no brainer. The quality is top notch, the temp rating is excellent, it’s a versatile bag that can be added to other defence bags to create very low temp sleep systems.

The price is awesome and I can easily recommend it.

If you don’t like bugs, try the Carinthia Tropen sleeping bag wich includes an insect net. Also combined with the Defence1 it becomes an impressive 4-Season sleep system.
Half my outdoor gear contains Carinthia surplus products. Anything the German military provides

From a finish guy here this is one of the best products ever. It has gotten me below freezing tempetures and kept me warm. Its not a down bag but the pacsize is really increadable and its syntethic nature make me confidante it would keep you warm when it gets wet. I 100% recomend this product.

I was so satisfied with the Defence 1 and 4 my last years in the army, that I bought both after leaving. They are both regularly used, and have never disapointed.

It might seem strange, but i use a Carinthia Eagle every night in my bed. I have extremely uneasy sleep, related to PTSD. I punch and I kick, which in it self is annoying. But since I also have a painfull busted knee, it's debilitating. The Eagle is extremely comfortable even at 30c. I bought the smallest size, which is a rather tight fit. It gives me better sleep then the different weightet blankets I've used previously. And at half the price for either of those.

Probably not a use case that's relevant for many. Guess I just wanted to say, before starting my rambling. That Carinthia has quality products for all temperatures:)

I finally got one of these and it immediately became my favorite sleeping bag, and it's not even close.

I’m a trucker and I’m now planning on getting a heavier version, just in case of a break down in the dead of winter aka worst case scenario so thanks for alerting me to such a great producer of mil spec bags as I trust those most.

I remember when the Australain Army changed over from civi sleeping bags (that were rated to 15c) to mountain sleeping bags (rated to -7c)..., what a huge difference it made to moral after a cold night.

Defence4 is recommended (is sold together with) "tropen". It has zippers on the side and bug net. That is awesome for warm climate, and when combined with defence4 make an excelent combo, as there are no air moving through both zippers.

Carinthia makes incredible gear no doubt. I love it all. My only gripe is their specs. I'm 6'5". Buying gear is never easy especially sleeping bags. I bought the Large Defence 1 based a lot on your review. Carinthia states that there bags generally come in two sizes. One being Large and able to fit a person up to 6'7". It's simply not the case. I bought the Large and could not get in and lay flat on my back. I actually contacted Tacsale and they simply stated it is what it is. The specs were generated by Carinthia and used by Tacsale. I love the bag so much I kept it and altered the bottom by opening the bag up, creating a barn door with the resulting flap, and sticking my feet out with down booties on. Not a big deal during the warmer months. During the colder months I tuck the Defence 1 inside my wiggy military bag and all is good. You have to ask, what good is a bag if it doesn't allow you to lie flat on your back. Luke maybe you can decipher why Carinthia uses the specs they do. What's the logic?

When I was 14 my parents bought me a Lesterel sleeping bag. It was awesome. I went to Tunisian desert, France, Baffin Island, Sweden, Apalachians... 34 years, it's brand new.

I love this bag. Have two of them, one of each size so i can go camping with a frend. Works great with Särmä TST Thermal cloak also. So no need for Defence 4. Have you seen the Carinthia Finnish M05 sleeping bag, its like defence 4 but with liner and spark resistant footbox.

Ahhh, the noble Sweat Bee, a foe I know very well. It was in fact the very first insect I was stung by once I moved from Detroit to WNC nearly 34 years ago.

Do you know how you can tell Luke's reviews are unbiased? He always let's the products speak for themselves. It is never Luke that tells you whether a product is good or bad, he always lets the products do that. Luke is just the narrator of the results. Great video Luke!
