Kenneth Kafui is known as one of the leading Ghanaian composers of his generation. Born in 1951, he grew up playing the organ and the harmonium , and studied music at the University of Ghana. He is currently a professor of music theory and composition at his alma mater.

His choral music is often written in Ghanaian languages, and “Mele Sue” illustrates Kafui’s use of Ghanaian rhythms. I hope you enjoy the dance between duple (beats divided into two) and compound (beats divided into three) as much as I did! 🦄

Like all pieces in “Music by Black Composers Violin Volume 1,” this piece was arranged and edited by Rachel Barton Pine. “Mele Sue” is featured in the book “Six African Piano Pieces (Tonal)”.
