This was after 4 years of compassionate attempts to dissuade her from voting for him again, taking a huge effort on my part not to insult her intelligence. When I realized she knew who he was and supported him anyway? I can’t begin to describe the despair I felt in that moment—the implication being that no matter what we say or do, they want revenge on “liberal elites” more than anything else in the world. i think it's a lot like starting a relationship with a person that you find really exciting and it seems like she/he is everything you were always looking for. And after a while of being happy and hopeful, you're starting to notice a few things that seem weird, your friends start telling you whats wrong with him/her and that this partner is bad for you.. but you dont want to hear it, you dont want to believe it, cause you already invested so much hope and energy and you let your guard down. you dont want to go back to that place were you felt lost and hopeless. so you ignore all the signs
