Throttle position reset honda civic

I cleaned my throttle body and my civic started running horribly! I took my car to the dealer and they wanted to charge me hundreds of dollars to fix or simple reset the throttle position. So I bought this nifty obd2 scanner and reset it myself. This video shows you how to do it.

Thank you. I had cleaned my throttle body due to engine rattle at idle. I replaced the gasket and cleaned out the throttle body carefully making sure not to damage the airflow sensors. Put it back together and to my surprise the rattle was gone but I was idling at 1300 on my 07 CR-V. With the foxwell tool I fixed the engine codes for high idle and found the TP reset how you mentioned. Fixed my high idle issue. I proceeded to do the Honda idle relearn. Procedure after that. Good as spanking new. All problems fixed. Tha k you so much. You saved me a trip to the mechanic who would have charged me 200 bucks to press a couple of buttons. Now I have my very own diagnostic tool with all the Honda programming. Super helpful. One thing Eric the car guy, Scotty and even chrisfix fail to mention is that with these electronic throttles you gotta reset the TP position after cleaning the throttle body. The job literally cannot be completed without this tool.

You saved a costly dealer trip, I fixed it myself with that tool in my TSX 2009! It probably cost me less than the dealer was going to charge me and the bs he would state.

Disconect battery terminals. Turn on headlights to discharge any current left. Reconnect battery terminals. Start car and let run for 30 minutes until it is at operating temperature and fan has turn on once and let idle another 10 min. That's how you relearn the idle position on a honda. That simple

Excellent! I had the same problem, I cleaned the throttle body and I was out of control, accelerated. I bought the same scanner and ran the TPS reset procedure and the problem was requested. the car was working perfectly as new. thanks you for your video.

I went to Halford and they had the same scanner, went through the video with the guy and its absolutely brilliant now on the revs. Didn't cost me a penny.

Thanks for this video, I didn't purchase the scanner, instead I found mobile mechanic in local add to reset with snap-on scanner for $50. Problem solved instantly.

Most garage didn't aware of this, always think I damaged it during cleaning.

Your video put me on the trail to fixing my 06 Odyssey with the same idle problems. Like you, none of the YT non-scanner videos worked. I got the newer Foxwell NT530 and it fixed the idle easy. I also had a VSA warning light and it cleaned that up as well. The scanner gives factory OEM level capability. I used Chilton on line repair which appears to be factory repair procedures that require Honda HDS scanner. The NT530 did everything the HDS was required to do. In fact the on line instructions were almost identical to Chilton. So when it called for HDS to do something, the NT530 did it. Fantastic investment. When you buy the scanner you have to select one car mfg such as Honda. If you want another mfg it is $80. Given the capability of this scanner it is a bargain. I paid twice as much for the best Innova 5610 (Harbor Freight ZR15) and it did nothing except read codes. The toughest part of using the NT530 is attaching the scanner is to set up a user ID with Foxwell then take out the SD card from the scanner, install it in a tiny card reader and install that in a PC to download the Honda update. Foxwell customer service is fantastic. They came back to me less than a day.

Very nice information you shared. Having a bi-directional scan tool is a must for DIYers since all the cars have computers.

I managed to reset it without a scanner. After reading a lot of tutorials and procedures that work on other cars, I've done the following and somehow worked for me:

1. Turn off all the accessories (lights, blower, a/c, stereo etc etc);
2. Turn on the engine, let it warm-up until operating temp;
3. Shut down the engine, unplugged both battery terminals;
4. Turn on headlights (to discharge up remaining electricity in the system);
5. Touched both positive and negative terminals of the battery together (battery unconnected);
6. Turn headlights off and connect battery terminals back;
7. Turn accessories on with throttle fully pressed down;
8. Release throttle;
9. Turn everything off again;
10. Turn engine on, don't touch the throttle, let it run for about 10 minutes;
11. Turn it off again;
12. Turn on and check.

This worked for me as well! I had the starter motor changed - the mechanic removed the throttle (prob cleaned as well) afterwards I had high revs at idle and engine surging when flick to nueutral at low speed. Had the mechanic reset the throttle and it fixed the idle etc. cheers!

I wonder if thats why my idle drops really low at red lights? Like around 500rpm. It goes up if i turn the fan on (i never use a/c) or other electronics like lights. Ive cleaned the throttle body, and MAF and MAP sensors. I also run cleaner through the intake manifold to help with carbon build up. I have a 2019 honda civic coupe ex 1.5t. I know its not the same generation as your car in the video, and I have a turbo. Ill have to research this.

Watched a few videos. But I think I got it narrowed down. About a month ago I went and cleaned my throttle body on my 09 Honda Accord. I took it off the car and cleaned it of course moving the plate with my fingers. So after I was done the idle is all over the place. So I bit the bullet and bought the scanner on Amazon. Expecting it in a few days. But I will use your video to navigate the screens. Maybe they have changed since you made this video. But I am feeling confident that this is it.

I replaced the TBPS and my car ran worse after I put in a new one. Initially all I thought you had to do was buy a new one, install it and you're all set. There is actually steps after that. Lo and behold the TBPS came with some simple instructions. I had to clear the positioning sensor code, and rev the car between 40 and 70mph for several minutes turn the car on and off and magically the engine light disappeared. So it's not just a remove install and that's all process.
