5 Common Computer Myths People Still Believe
Here is a list of common pc myths that people still believe in 2021

1. If Your Computer is Slow, It’s Always a Virus
Its not always a virus or malware, it could be related to many other things, like
* low end hardware
* faulty hardware
* corrupt operating system
* bad drivers
* to many programs running in background

2. Macs or Linux Don’t Need Antivirus Software or get infected with virus
This simple not true and there are many different types of infection like malware, viruses, trojans, ransomware and more that infected Linux and Mac

3. Higher wattage power supply's uses more electricity
Generally, Power Supplies (PSUs) only deliver the amount of power needed for the system to run. So, if your system components require 300W, and you use a 500W PSU, it would still only consume 300 watts. A PSU only draws as much power as it needs. The efficiency is where slight differences are made
What is PSU Efficiency and Why is it Important?

4. Frequent Defragging must be done?
No, windows will automatically manage and control your system and defragment the drive when needed. (Remember: You don't need to defragment a SSD)

5. Screen savers save your monitor screen.
Maybe when it was a CRT, but nowadays, a LCD or LED monitor does not need a screensaver.

Who else here used to love the cathartic nature of watching the defragmentation process in Oh how I miss the movement of those coloured blocks. Thanks again Brian. Love the straight forward nature of all your vids sir.

Yes, but screen savers were a ton of fun. I miss my Flying Toasters..

irony of the first one is sometimes it's actually the anti-virus, causing the slow down. especially on low spec hardware.

I still get customers running 2 or more Antivirus software programs at once and then they wonder why their system is so slow. I had one that had 8 of them running.

The biggest myth is the more you spend on high tech hardware the better of a gamer you will become.

When my computer is running slow, I just toss some more coal in the firebox and ramp up the steam. I'll often wipe the abacus over with a damp sponge aswell, so it slides better and doesn't suffer from bottlenecks. I also rub some vaseline on the internal power supply bearings, so the hamster doesn't have run so fast when I'm playing

Who remembers having to 'PARK' the hard drive before moving the computer?

My Dad loves to use Ccleaner *daily* and enthusiastically tells me about all the space he’s saving. I explain that it’s mostly just cache which just gets put back on, but he doesn’t get it.

Screen savers will come back for OLED displays which definitely suffer burn in. Assuming they become popular and low cost.

Hi Brian,
Thank you for the 5 myths.
I, personally, collect many photographs and screenshots. I enjoy watching them throughout my day as I'm away from my computers.
I find having the many photos lift my spirit and brighten up a day that can sometimes drag on and on.

Late '90s: A computer came into the shop where I worked. Customer complaint: suddenly slow. Boss tells me scan for viruses and one popped up. The description was a file infecter virus... a nuisance but not malicious, and there was only one file affected so it had never been activated. Boss tells me to delete the file and call it done. I tried to argue with him but he insisted. That's when I realized my boss, the owner of a computer shop, didn't understand computers.
Another myth, originally valid but not so much recently, is don't use magnetized screwdrivers around computers. Back in the floppy disk days this was a concern, but who uses floppies anymore. Go ahead an magnetize your screwdrivers, they are so handy to have around.

Like the screen saver, one other myth today is that you should leave your computer on all the time. In the early days of computers continually powering your computer off and on could weaken the power supply resulting in a failure. Today with newer computers that isn't the case.

Even back in the CRT days, the best screen saver was DPMS power save, rather than just showing a non static image, the screen powered
Modern LED lit LCD screens have a very long backlight life (thermal failures etc. are possible, but not routine), but it still saves energy to put then in power save when not needed
If you want a screen saver in the background - or as a 5 minute warning before entering sleep, there's no harm in it

You showed my Power Supply, Asus 1200W Thor! 😜

Well actually... There is a difference in powerdraw between higher and lower wattage power supplies although they may have the same rating. Because they also have an efficiency curve that depends on how much load there is on the PSU.

3D screen savers used to be a bad idea as they dragged down the CPU. More than once I solved slow servers by removing the 3D pipe screensaver.
