The small city of Springfield, Ohio, has been thrust into the international spotlight after former U.S. president Donald Trump's bizarre claim that Haitian immigrants are abducting residents' pets and eating them.

There have been no verified incidents of Haitians eating pets, according to Springfield city officials and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, who is a Republican.

Eric Sorensen explains how vicious rumours are spawning fear and hatred in small-town America are.

That is a lie. Residents at a town hall meeting we’re claiming that they were losing their animals and had seen migrants gutting animals at the side of the road.

So the residents are all lying? You’re a news organization. Send a reporter to talk to residents. It’s true 100%

I love how they focus on the Dogs part, because while there isn't direct evidence of them eating dogs, there IS evidence of them eating cats.

The whole "It's not true" thing came from ABC calling a town manager, and the Town Manager said it wasn't true. Like if you were managing a town where a third of the 60, 000 population are immigrants from a brutal culture and there are dozens of reports of animals being eaten, what are you going to do? You're going to deny it. If you say it's true, A.) you look like you've done a horrible job and B.) you might risk retaliation from the brutal culture.

Making a phone call and accepting a denial is NOT JOURNALISM. Period. End of story. Them declaring it's false based on a PHONE CALL is not journalism. It's propaganda.

I don't know the precise truth, but I do know that this is propaganda.
