What is sin? Redefining Sin in the New Covenant by Dave Geisler A Grace Place

Many times when we come to sin we filter it through our cultural understanding or religious tradition. That is very dangerous beloved. Why? Because very few things can nullify the word of God yet Jesus told a group of Pharisees and us today

Mat 15:6 ...So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God.

Much of tradition today looks at God as the divine judge. But is that the relationship the Bible describes between us and God? NO! Mankind is not in need of a divine judge but a kinsman redeemer! And Jesus is just that -- He is our kinsman Redeemer. We are the very Bride of Christ. Let me see if I can illustrate this "law approach" verses "relational" by illustration of marriage as we know it.

Interestingly the word penalty is not used in the NT (KJV or the MKJV) and it is never used in the sense of God being the judge needing a satisfaction for sin. Now the word wage is used as something that follows sin, like if we jump off a building and the wage/penalty for that is death because of the law of gravity. God didn't give us the penalty, it is a wage of what we have done, it falls right in line with the sowing and reaping principle.
Sin (any thought, word or deed) done independent of God is pregnant with death and truly God's intervention and justice is not pregnant with death but with mercy, goodness and life...when we make the penalty come from God then we misunderstand the very nature of God. God is restorative not retributive.

Joh 3:17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Joh 3:18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
Joh 3:19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.
Joh 3:20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.
Joh 3:21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God."
