60FPS Hi-Res Test

Don't all go getting excited about three videos in one day, this is just a test video. People using Firefox to browse YouTube have been unable to enjoy the new 1080p or 720p 60fps video options, in many cases they've been unable to watch in 1080p or 720p at all since Google "improved" YouTube again. I've noticed that I've been able to watch *some* high res, high fps videos on the Firefox browser, just not mine, so I'm testing a new encoding format to try to fix it.

As for all of my existing videos, for some bizarre reason they're working just fine, which is a relief. If this test doesn't work we're just going to have to wait for Firefox to support media source extensions. Or use Google Chrome.

Yes I am rather annoyed.

Update: At the time of writing this video is available on Chrome at up to 1080p at 60fps. In Firefox the best it could manage was regular 720p. However as soon as YouTube had finished processing and 1080p became available, both that and 720p stopped working. Or in other words - I have no clue what YouTube's playing at. Looks like you'll have to use Chrome for YouTube if you want 60fps in high-res. At least until Mozilla fix Firefox.

The music's "Pitch Black" from machinimasound by the way.

The framerate is INSTANTLY noticeable for me. I think this is the first YouTube update that I actually will commend Google for.

Job well done Google. *Raises thumb

On FireFox and no video available above 480p. It just goes into an infinite loading loop or gives an error message.

Good to know google aren't above shafting people who don't buy into their spywar... browser. Alongside removing the ability to view 1080p HTML5 videos from FireFox it just shows that they will deliberately hamstring their competitors to gain an advantage.

Thanks for the nostalgic trip mate ;D

A "bug" that forces you to use a Google product to view a Google owned website?

It isn't a bug. It's a feature.

Man, the difference between 30 and 60 is huge. As someone who already uses Chrome I gotta say I'm loving this upgrade to YT.

The Mighty Jingles
Mozilla implemented enough MSE (Media Source Extensions) to run youtube htlm5 player with h.264. The problem is, it'a not enough to run it with DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP). In short: this buffers video as you watch it, instead buffering it all the way. And Youtube denies data streams if your browser doesn't support dash (because they are scrubs).

That's why Firefox users are limited to 360p and 720p when using html5 player. Flash is still able to play all resolutions but without 60 fps which means people will be able to play videos at 480p or lower if it's uploaded with 60 fps.

It's not Mozilla's fault - MSE/DASH is currently in development and there is no full specification so they can't just put it in the browser. They are limited to opensource project (dash.js) and this one doesn't support DASH yet.

So (TL;DR version):
Firefox using html5 player: limited resolutions (360p and 720p) and no 60 fps because Google denies other data strems if DASH isn't supported.
Firefox using Flash Player: no 1080p and 720p if video is uploaded with 60 fps (Flash doesn't support it). Old videos (24 fps) are not affected and can still play at all resolutions with Flash Player.

Some videos work because they are using VP9 codec (WebM) and Firefox fully supports that (with DASH so all resolutions and 60fps).

If you don't want to wait for either Google (to enable non-dash data streams for browsers that don't support it) or Mozilla (to implement dash support for h.264 which won't happen any time soon) you can try encoding your videos in VP9 instead of h.264. This way your videos should work on all browsers. The only downside is: more work for you because you will have to find new encoding presets for new codec. Also, VP9 encoding takes more time...
For now, this is all you can do. If you want your videos to be available with all resolutions on every browser you have to either drop 60 fps or use VP9.
Or... force your viewers to use Chrome, just like Google is trying to do right now.
