Unboxing The Roku Premiere (4620R) And First Impressions | Ever-Curious Geek

Unboxing and examining the new Roku Premiere streaming player (model 4620R). This is Roku's middle-of-the-pack model, more or less replacing the old Roku 2. This model is 4K capable but not HDR capable. Its only ports are for HDMI and power, so it is Wi-Fi only. There is no "anywhere remote" with this player, but rather a basic IR (infrared) remote with shortcut buttons. It is definitely larger than previous generations, so you're not going to be able to hide it behind your TV (at least without an IR blaster of some kind) so bear that in mind.

🤪 ► WHO AM I?
I'm an artsy Midwest landscape photographer, a writer / blogger, a product reviewer / tester / focus group of one, a radio / TV / film major turned social media manager / content marketer, a tech geek raised in (and in many ways stuck on) the era of MS-DOS & NES, a DIY enthusiast / maker / tinkerer, a pop culture geek, a movie lover (and a collector with a fierce loyalty to DVDs and Blu-rays over streaming), and a social media comedian / general wiseass. I'm a weird creative hyphenate who's always curious and chasing after what's cool and beautiful in this crazy world of ours.

I vlog and stream videos (and often long stream of consciousness rants) about art photography, movies, social media, tech, Bob Ross-style wet on wet oil painting, pop culture, general geekdom, DIY / maker projects, reviews, Midwest life (Wisconsin & Minnesota generally) and whatever else lights my brain that week.

I'm based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and travel often to Door County Wisconsin, Duluth Minnesota, Superior Wisconsin and all over the Midwest for photography, exploration and general fun and merriment.

Mark david, which one has the most good and free apps? Is it roku or fire tv? I am between the two to decide to buy, I am between the roku ultra 4k and the fire tv cube, which has more options of applications of films, TV channels and series?

Hi Mark,
FYI: you can pair an enhanced remote with the Premiere even though you don't get one in box, the box itself has the hardware to use an RF remote. The packaging configuration is just so they can sell it cheaper, and they won't tell you that you can pair the other remote so people buy the more expensive configurations.

To pair an enhanced remote open the battery cover on the remote and press the pairing button so the LED flashes then use the included IR remote navigate to settings system restart to reboot the Premiere. The enhanced remote should pair on restart.

By the way if the said remote is paired with another unit, unplug that one first.

You can also buy an additional enhanced remote from ROKU as well, if the remote you have is needed for the other unit.

Have a great day, and hope you are able to use this tip.

Hey Mark, As Mentioned, I put the Remote in pairing mode, then power cycled the ROKU. The Remote was detected on startup. As far as I remember, the option wasn't there until the remote paired on startup.
