Superliminal speedruns might break your mind

Superliminal is a game based on forced perspective and optical illusions. This makes for one of the coolest speedruns, that may also break your mind

My channel generally focuses on a more casual side of speedruns. With these videos I want to show off cool speedruns, explain how they work, and entertain. Hopefully you enjoy the content and maybe even take up speedrunning yourself, because it is truly a lot of fun!

Superliminal description (from Steam):

ABOUT THIS GAME
Superliminal is a first-person puzzle game based on forced perspective and optical illusions. Puzzles in this game give you a sense of the unexpected. Players need to change their perspective and think outside the box to wake up from the dream.

WAKE UP
As you fall asleep with the TV on at 3AM, you remember catching a glimpse of the commercial for Dr. Pierce’s Somnasculpt dream therapy program. By the time you open your eyes, you’re already dreaming - beginning the first stages of this experimental program.

PERCEPTION IS REALITY
Explore a dream world where everything is exactly as it seems. Tread carefully as the world slowly unravels around you and subverts your expectations. What you see isn’t always precisely what you get.

MAN VS MACHINE
In this fully-voiced adventure, Dr Glenn Pierce is doing his questionable best to guide you home and out of the dreamscape. His artificial intelligence assistant, however, is having trouble understanding exactly how you’re here at all, and has other plans for you.

DEVELOPER COMMENTARY
We’ve added an extensive developer commentary throughout the game, so you can learn the secrets and history behind the game’s development.

CHALLENGE MODE
The overwhelming response from the speedrunning community to Superliminal inspired us to add a new Challenge Mode, which will score you per-level on metrics such as time to finish, grabs, and jumps.

EXPERIMENTAL WORKSHOP SUPPORT
Superliminal features Steam Workshop integration. Bring any 3D object into the game and play around with mind-bending perspective tricks.

Hey! It’s super cool to see you running this game that I’ve been playing for almost a year now! I think you used my tutorial too, which is extremely flattering, and I can’t wait to see all the new runners that you’ll bring into the community :)

Gotta love this game, the devs really did a good job on making it unnecessarily unsettling and it always gave me the feel of a horror game
Truly the game of 2019

The optical illusion dead end (2:15) would be so evil/good for a horror game but then again a lot of these illusions would be good ideas to use in a horror game.

Imagine playing this game in VR… that would be so trippy 😂

A nice mix of Stanley, Portal and the Backrooms. I swear I've seen demos of the core physics concept but didn't know there was a full game out.

_Superliminal_ renews my confidence that game devs in the 2020's will still be able to produce genuinely unique, challenging & entertaining games... and it all started as a university programming assignment! I'm fascinated by optical illusions & how the human brain interprets visual inputs, so a game mechanic that allows you to manipulate objects using perspective is just beyond brilliant. I didn't realise until now that they built an in-game timer for speedrunners, but that's even more amazing... clearly a game made _by_ gamers _for_ gamers. Absolutely love it.

What I love about this game is that I can't tell if the way they programmed was either incredibly complex or incredibly simple

Hey Speezy! I am a verifier for this game on SRC and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for running this game and for making a video on it. It's nice to see bigger creators give this game more exposure. I absolutely love this game and the speedrunning community behind it to bits, and I'm so excited to see the traction that this video gets and for all of the new runs that we could have to verify because of it. We're always lucky to have newer runners so really, we appreciate you! <3

"It's been less than thirty minutes and he's finished the entire game.
I'm so glad we spent more than 7 years on this game."

-Devs, watching the world record speedrun.

One thing I like about the title logo of this game is that the M is actually empty space bordered by a wedge, a notched recatngle, and the two I's. In most situation's you'd see the M first and have to strain your eyes to see the I's instead, but since we already know the title and how it's spelled, we can see all three at a glance and instead have to concentrate hard to see that the M isn't actually there.

Yo, Speezy: I discovered your speedrunning after watching GDQ and Developers React channels. Super dig your casual style of very seriously taking on a speed running project. The narration keeps the motivation and energy up through the game. Not knowing what's coming up keeps the material surprising. That all being said, and no knock to how you approach gaming since it is so personally motivated (Still working on solo/self found offline Holy Grail for D2R - obviously. Ergo, I get it), but how do you feel about just visiting numerous games exploring their speed running community? Do you stop and go back on streams or in your own time to old projects just for yourself? Ever try to use such a diverse speed running knowledge to finding new tactics, or is your thrill just getting in deep and dirty to a new game, a new run, a new challenge and just ford the waters the greats before us did and hope to honor their efforts merely through emulation?

In a nutshell, I guess: What's your personal philosophy of speedrunning games?

This game is a legitimate masterpiece, and it resonates with me in particular due to the message it imparts in the final level; it hits in the emotions, for sure.
