Original owner of a 2009 5.4 3v here but nowhere near as many miles as on yours. I’ve changed oil at proper intervals since day 1 and also started flushing the engine several years ago, however I use Kleen Flo engine flush. I had the valve covers off it last fall for the first time and it still looked as shiny and clean as new in there, the engine also still purrs as quietly and smooth as the day I drove it off the dealers lot. Engine repairs over the years have been the a/c pump clutch (2013) passenger side exhaust manifold (2018) and both VCT solenoids (2022). It’s getting just over 20 mpg highway on a completely stock FX4 Luxury Package S/Crew except for an aftermarket Cat Back exhaust as I’m a big believer in don’t f—- with them to make them ‘better’. Also only Motorcraft maintenance parts and oil filters have ever been used on it, overall I’m pretty happy with this truck after 14+ years.

This was done back min the 60's-70's. However, use the old type, Ford F-Type trans fluid, it has more detergents.

The oil has detergents in it, no need too flush if you change the oil regularly.

Did you say 3000 miles? I'm a bit shocked with such a high quality Oil as that you wouldn't do 5000 miles....

Original timing components? Just did a full timing job on mine at 175k and installed a phaser lockout kit. I also run 5w30 changing every 3500miles. Hoping to get some good longevity like you.

Right! If you are lookin for an old engine cleaning remedy? Use 1 quart of diesel fuel and 4 quarts of oil. Iron blocks and heads only! Aluminum block engines with aluminum heads, use 1/2 quart diesel fuel.

Hello, do you know if it has the original timing chain component with the cam phasers?

Do you know if it has the original transmission?

I bought mine with 140, 000. I use mobile 1 5w30 synthetic, I drain every drop of the transmission fluid out and run mobile synthetic tranny fluid, and also mobile for the differentials. I also change out the trans valve body myself (cheap from ford). I towed a total of 12, 500 pound from WA to CA and it towed like nothing up hill and all. Drives great! However, with 140, 000 I did maintenance on all major parts. I think it should run for other 150, 000 with out any issues. I also do a tranny service every 40, 000.

Thank you

Have you replaced the cam phasers, timing chains, timing chain guide, and timing chain tensioners on this truck? 400k on your engine is amazing. A friend of mine said that ones this engine reached 150k+ it’s inevitable to have the timing chain and cam phaser to fail.

My 2008 ford f150 5.4 has 320k miles and still runs strong same motor and trans im the second owner of the truck bought it when it had 280k miles from my uncle and i put 40k miles since i have owned it and its been a really reliable truck it really has been these 5.4 do like thinner oil thats what i have noticed but if you put thicker oil its fine but i would replace it every 10k miles or so

I use gear lube to flush my engines. 80/90 weight. Keeps all my engines going well past 250k plus until they get wrecked.

No cam phaser codes? Mine gave me 0345 and 0349 codes at 220k. Mechanic shop said get a new truck because it was driving with no up hill power, misfiring etc. then I went behind them and plugged the coil pack in all the way and found a vacuum leak in the fuel vapor pressure regulator line. Now for a year Ive been getting 18 on the highway and the only issue I have is that orange light and how every service advisor wants to all the sudden become my financial advisor and tells me to trash a full sized 4x4 truck because the orange light is on and it will take them all day to get to the timing components. It dosent even make sense for me to trash a working v8 that gets such good mileage just because someone else dosent want to do the work. Imagine being a mechanic and thinking one day of labor is comparable to spending 70k on a new truck. Makes no sense to me. Anyways, from that day on I bought a service manual and became my own mechanic, still am trying to decide if I want to do the timing job or just save a little each month for a reman engine for when it’s time since she’s running so well

YEA! If you take good care of a machine, it will provide you with good service. If you neglect it, you will have problems.
