My grandad used to make me these as a child, they were delicious. I used to be amazed by how fast he could peel potatoes so I asked him "how he got so good at peeling them " he replied "in the army punishment for disobeying orders was peeling potatoes and I was always in trouble " thanks for making this video 👏

Here in good old Oz Takeaway food shop owners will par fry them and then when you order them they deep fry them which gives the potatoe cakes a lovely crispy finish but also makes the potatoe almost melt which is very very nice and all with white vinegar of course! Nice Vid thanks!

They're actually known as *Potato Scallops, * not Cakes or Fritters and this name has nothing to do with Seafood Scallops. This name is derived from a very old French term known as *_'escalope'_* which translates in English as Scallop and refers to an old recipe known as *Scalloped Potatoes, * which is thin slices of potato layered into a casserole dish, with a creamy white sauce poured over the potato slices and then topped with cheese and baked in the oven until golden brown. In modern times, this dish has had its name simplified to *Potato Bake.*

In Australia, in the 1970's and 1980's many Fish & Chip Shops and Snack Bars purchased bulk bags of a product known as *Potato Scallops, * which were ready prepared slices of potato that were covered in a thick batter. For convenience, these Potato Scallops could be easily and quickly thrown into the deep fryer basket along with the Fish, Seafood and Chips and cooked until crispy crunchy and then sprinkled with sea salt or chicken salt, and then wrapped in butchers paper along with all the other fried foods that they sold.

Many Fish & Chip Shops also liked calling them 'Potato Scallops', because it complimented their core business of selling cooked fish, seafood and chips, usually with some fresh slices of lemon and Tartare Sauce. It was common for them to sell "Seafood Baskets" which comprised of a piece of Crumbed Cod or Snapper, Serving of Chips, Calamari Rings, Seafood Scallops, Crumbed Prawns, Seafood Bites and Potato Scallops. 😎👍

They're called potato scallops. A fritter is more like a pikelet. You know, like corn fritters.
