I tried this before, it worked to a certain degree, and having 100s of plants my flat smelled like a bakery for a while which was lovely, but eventually the cinnamon started to go mouldy which wasn't lovely and the gnats didn't really vanish... until I discovered Neem oil!!!

Sand works too. Put a 1/4 inch layer down, it’s too thick for the gnats to reach the soil to lay eggs. Any eggs laid in the sand will die.

I add hydrogen peroxide to water for weekly watering. Also, I spray top of soil with straight hydrogen.

Instead of using pure cinammon you can also mix cinammon with water and spray the soil with it. Saw this tip in a video about aquascaping, where they showed how to plant very small carpets and having them take root before filling up the aquarium all the way. To a certain degree, the cinammon prevents the soil from moulding and the gnats don't like it either.

Cinnamon works, but not always. It's better used directly on cut stems and trimmed taproots. It's less effective on gnats. If you introduce a Drocera (sticky carnivorous plant) it should clear up any gnats fairly quickly. If you do get a Drocera, be sure you read up on their needs. They're very sensitive to too much nutrients. They've evolved to metabolize bugs because of their native environments soil being nutrient deficient. Do not fertilize them, just give them bugs, and keep their soil (peat moss with some sand or spagnum) moist. Dont let them dry out but also dont let them stay soggy. They're a life saver against gnat problems.

Mosquito dunk/grits work too, just water your plants with them, this helps kill the larva, and since it uses Bacillus thuringiensis i dont think it causes harm to plants, since mine didnt shoe any sign of damage

The soil I bought already had fungus gnats in there. I ordered 3 bags, 1 bag per 5gl pot, and would spout a seedling and within 2 weeks I would be infested. I know cinnamon doesn’t really work but mosquito bites does.

Just submerged your plants with water mix with dish soap for an hour then rinse with fresh water. Then put wood ashes on top of the soil. Or just completely dry your plants for sometime. All the insects will die. Then water only down parts. And you can cover with sand on top

I almost killed my plant doing this, bacause the cinnamon was like sealing up the soil and my plant almost got root rot. But it helped a bit withe the gnats ❤

I did this for an avocado plant and the plant died shortly after so did the gnats. Maybe it was just too beat up by then. I read peroxide diluted could help so I tired that. Seemed to but didn't get all. I tired the neem oil and that seemed to do nothing. Cinnamon was my last option.

BE ADVISED: Works best as a tea — add cinnamon to tea bag, steep in water and water your plants with it, and use it only sparingly. You will kill your plant using it like this. Also, works well as a rooting hormone if you’re into organic gardening or against chemicals.
